Pros

PTO Fellow Coaches The students

Cons

I’ve gone back and forth on how I wanted to write this review and have settled with the fact that I genuinely want to warn anyone who is thinking of working here. The pay is okay (although when I was hired, the base pay for coaches was only raised because someone in a different office noticed the LinkedIn posting was offering better pay than what actual current and seasoned coaches were making)… The PTO is great, but you will have to work during your time off if you don’t want to be completely swamped the next week. What I found to be the absolute hardest and worst part of the job is Senior Staff. They can be incredibly rude and very gossipy (they even have their own term for it called “the swirl”). They tend to speak very poorly of the coaches when they think they aren’t being overheard. During the second week of my employment, which was literally still when we were in orientation, it became very clear that they didn’t really like me and a big bulk of my job was essentially doing everything in my power not to further tick them off. I had tons of “check ins” which was really a meeting with a member of Senior Staff when they would spend the majority of the time criticizing me and leaving me feeling torn down and not lifted up or better equipped to coach my students. There is always something you can be doing more or better. Their micro aggressions are undeniable and they don’t realize the toxicity of some of the remarks they casually make. Unfortunately, it seems to have become a shared culture amongst the Senior Staff. tnAchieves as an organization undeniably makes a great impact on students, but the coaches, who do the bulk of student interaction, are treated beyond poorly. If your goal is to aid in student success, there are plenty of ways to do that that don’t come at the expense of your mental health. I know for certain I am not the only one who felt this way. The lack of empathy is evident in the way they speak to their coaches, and I would caution you before accepting a position here. I feel lucky to have found a position elsewhere and resign when I did.

Pros

- tnAchieves offers real opportunities for early-career professionals to grow. As a COMPLETE Coach, I gained valuable experience in student engagement, project management, and relationship-building—skills I’ll carry forward in my career. - The work is deeply impactful. Supporting students and mentors through the college transition process can be incredibly rewarding and fulfilling. - The role also opens doors to networking opportunities across Tennessee’s nonprofit and education spaces.

Cons

- Despite being a small nonprofit (around 55 employees statewide), there is a stark divide in power between leadership and the rest of the team. Leadership—including managers and senior staff—are almost exclusively individuals who started as COMPLETE Coaches themselves. While this might suggest upward mobility, it instead creates an insular, clique-like culture that resists accountability and reinforces unhealthy norms. - Leadership and HR operate in lockstep with the CEO, making it difficult to raise concerns or navigate issues without fear of retaliation. The organization often disguises performance issues as “growth opportunities,” which deflects responsibility from management and structural issues. I personally experienced this when my manager, with whom I had a consistently strained relationship, placed me on a “Growth Plan.” This was framed as support, but in truth, it was used to keep me in my role without addressing the root cause of our misalignment. Before the growth plan went into effect, I had already voiced concerns about the heavy workload and lack of support within the organization. However, my concerns were dismissed, and I was told by HR that I was being “inconsiderate” and needed to “pull myself up by my bootstraps.” As a result, my mental health suffered, and I came to work stressed and overwhelmed daily. For nearly two months, every aspect of my work—from internal and external communications to time management—was documented, which only added to my stress. - The workload is extremely heavy, and the travel expectations are high, particularly during busy seasons like Mandatory Meetings and Summer Bridge. These times feel like a test of endurance rather than a celebration of service, and the pressure to perform under intense scrutiny often feels like professional hazing. - tnAchieves consistently recruits former teachers and recent college grads, who are passionate but often unaware of the emotional and physical toll the role will take. These employees are overworked and underpaid, with little support or flexibility in return. - There is a serious lack of awareness—and at times, a lack of respect—when it comes to diversity, equity, and inclusion. On multiple occasions, I was made to feel uncomfortable in the office due to inappropriate or distasteful remarks made by superiors about race or politics. When I attempted to advocate for myself and raise concerns, I was met not with support, but with a sudden “change in policy” that further undermined my position and sense of safety. - Despite operating in major Tennessee cities like Knoxville, Memphis, and Nashville, there has yet to be any real effort from the organization to implement inclusive or identity-affirming DEI programming for staff or the communities we serve.

Do Not Work Here

Pros

The mission is outstanding. Helping students who need it is one of the greatest joys in life.

Cons

They hire those who are fresh out of college so they can overwork and underpay you. The management is racist, sexist, and demeaning. There is no room for growth. The work they are doing is great, but they are even tampering with the actual research being done on the program. The people who run this program, specifically Krissy, is a money hungry boss who will work you until they find a reason to fire you. You will be working 15 hour days here.
