“A successful start! Membrane filters have become indispensable in the examination of viruses, bacteria, and bacteriophages. We owe this to Dr. Beling”. – Gertrud Keese, Operations Manager and Procurator of Sartorius Membrane Filter Company, 1952 In celebration of the upcoming International Women's Day, we spotlight Dr. Adelaide Beling. Her pioneering work in the 1950s laid the economic foundation for the filter business by introducing dry filters and the so-called membrane filter method, which streamlined bacteriological water quality testing. This innovation was crucial in post-war Germany, where rapid and effective water testing was essential to prevent diseases. Adelaide Beling's example beautifully illustrates the historical roots of Sartorius' mission, while highlighting the vital, yet often overlooked, role women have played early on in advancing science and technology.
