On today's International Day for Biological Diversity, let's take a look at how the wetland biotope in Göttingen is thriving. In just ten months, the renaturation process of the former farmland has surpassed expert predictions. The flora has flourished, and ornithologists have recently spotted large numbers of partridges, ruffs, tree hawks, and whinchats from the vantage points. Even a Eurasian stone-curlew, an endangered bird species, has been seen resting on the site. Initiated and funded by Sartorius, the biotope project was executed in cooperation with the Heinz Sielmann Stiftung and the City of Göttingen. The 16-hectare former agricultural field was prepared to foster the growth of a floodplain forest with alders, willows and poplars as well as temporary shallow water pools and a pond were designed. Today, the viewing platforms have become a popular destination for both experts and nature lovers, who can watch from afar as nature reclaims its habitat.
