Does Appen offer relocation assistance?

Pros

Teamwork, Supportive Management, Collaboration, People Eager to Help

Cons

Salary, Benefits, Career Pathing, Silo'd Teams, Executive's Out-of-Touch with Reality, Lack of Diversity and Inclusion, Lack of Training

Advice to Management

Listen to your employees (especially those on the front lines). Significant work should be done to train ALL employees on complexities of product and how to use the tool. Sales doesn't know what the Annotation Platform is, how it works, how to sell it, and what customers would be the right fit. They are also way overpriced and are losing customers left and right due to pricing, constant platform issues, and better service models. They have no team who reviews platform bugs and issues (the same team making product improvements works on bugs. A bug can't be fixed unless someone is taken off working on product updates to focus on the bug) and yet, they are constantly making updates to the tool. A team should be dedicated exclusively for fixing platform issues quickly and efficiently. Also, be more open and transparent. Many employees are leaving because the company continues to make poor decisions. The D&I offering is almost laughable. Been around for 20 years and when they had nothing to offer, they kept saying "we are new and we will get there." It is all for show. Specific teams are focusing on it, but Execs created a committee to improve it only for looks. Every team operates on their own island and as such, you are left to figure things out on your own. There is also too much red tape-employees should be empowered to do the right thing for their customers-not have to get approvals from everyone. Being publicly traded, everything is for their shareholders. They are starting to make improvements but they still need several years before they get there. Many employees are burnt out and are ready to leave.

Does Appen offer parental leave?

Pros

Our clients are smart and doing very interesting work.

Cons

I am a legacy Figure Eight employee, acquired by Appen in early 2019. Very little thought was put into how Figure Eight employees would be integrated into the new company. We certainly feel like an after-thought. Bare Minimum Benefits. Big HR announcement at the company all-hands was receiving 4 weeks' paternity. Compared to the employer brands around Silicon Valley they simply don't compete. Culture: Despite the company doing quite well, there's very little comradery. It feels quite political like there are a handful of people that make all the decisions. There's little sense of urgency and wins aren't celebrated as often as one would hope. Most of the employees are work from home which contributes. Summary: This is no longer a fun, scrappy, fast-paced SF tech company.

Advice to Management

Try being above average to your employees and you'll get more out of them.

Does Appen assist with or provide childcare?

Pros

Easy to join by signing up through their website.

Cons

NO Integrity and NO Support team to solve problems. There is a project of data collection that requires you to do real visit on business sites, you can either do by walking or by using vehicles, however, many sites are located close by, so you will be out in the crowd to collect some pictures and information through their mobile application. It is not clear how and when they do their quality check on your submission and they will never give you any feedback on this. Their invoicing system is also not clear, as it is stated as auto generated, but you will never know whether it has been submitted or not. I worked as freelancer and I personally have completed some tasks of this particular physical project on May 2021 but I have never received my payment. I have contacted their finance support which by then they informed me about how many qualified submissions that I made. However, they keep saying that the invoice will be processed and their last email stated that it will be paid this August. I waited but there was not even a penny coming into my account, and then I sent several emails to their support team, but nobody responded and they simply ignored my emails of inquiries. I see this is the way they use people to work for free, and have no intention to pay anyone on this project and they do not care. Appen, I have done my task on particular sites to fulfill your requirements and you have the benefit of having the data on your end but you are not fair. This company is a company of thieves and they conduct Modern Slavery.

Advice to Management

This company used to be good, but what you have now is nothing but stealing.

I see this is the way they use people to work for free, and have no intention to pay anyone on this project and they do not care.
