I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Marks & Spencer (Edinburgh, Scotland) in June 2015
Interview
Completed online assessment, selected interview slot few days later. Took passport, birth certificate and national insurance card to interview.
Completed role play with recruitment officer, she was customer in food department with only an hour to organise dinner party. I was assistant and required to offer help.
I was given some price listings and item descriptions plus details of offers which may be relevant.
I was advised not to be too concerned about pricing although you are best to offer customer items from all budget options.
Remember to mention all relevant offers and cross sell ( recommend products such as napkins, balloons etc)
Mention other services offered by store such as online ordering, home delivery, buy and collect (these will be detailed on the information sheets and you are allowed to refer to these throughout the assessment)
As you 'assist ' the customer, make a connection, display empathy and offer to show where each item is (take them over, don't just point!)
Don't worry if you are shy, they are looking for friendly, helpful staff who go the extra mile, quietly confident is fine.
Try not to be embarrassed but don't worry if you feel red faced, just take a deep breath and drink of water and pretend you are helping someone you know well.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
No formal questions as such, just the role play and general details
I interviewed at Marks & Spencer (Milton Keynes, England)
Interview
Initially went and the last candidate overran (i waited for 40 minutes extra) so my interview got moved to next week. Original interviewer wasn't available so a colleague performed it. They could not find the interview sheet so had to come up with questions on the spot and get my details again. I was a bit annoyed but I think the interview was okay.

Question 1
What would you do if you have been given a task but a long queue is building up at tills, and there is only one colleague serving?
Quite informal, mostly asking about my reasons for applying to them specifically - I recommend looking at their welfare and environmental status, and the fact that their brand is associated with higher quality food

Question 1
Why would you choose to work at M&S rather than at another supermarket?
I interviewed at Marks & Spencer (London, England)
Interview
Very chilled out interview with a few questions about simple stuff like what you would do in a confrontational event. Really nice interviewer, felt more like a chat than an interview.
