This was an operations role with Shopify Capital. The interview process is as follows:
1. Brief Call with the Hiring Manager. (15 min)
2. Life Story Interview with someone in HR. (1 hr)
3. A case study and presentation with the hiring manager. (Not sure)
4. A discussion with someone else on the team (could be multiple people). (Can be several hours)
I never got past the Life Interview. So this is what I tried to do personally, but take it with a grain of salt because I failed. It can start at any point in your life, the recruiter from HR wanted to know where I grew up, what I was like in highschool etc.
The purpose of the Life Story, from my understanding, is to demonstrate how you exemplify the traits Shopify's looking for: Impact, Trust, Engagement, Readiness and Self-awareness
I would recommend breaking your life down into chapters/milestones that highlight significant events. Then under each one of those chapters/milestones try to highlight some of the traits Shopify is looking for.
Overall, the process was interesting and obviously my review is biased because I didn't make it to the next round.
The hiring manager was extremely cool, I think the only reason I got an interview was because I kept messaging him on LinkedIn. He was kind enough to take a phone call with me to discuss the role after I messaged him.
I even reached out to other members of the team, just to get a feel for everyone and what the work was like. One member of the team even took a call with me on a WEEKEND; which was super nice of them.
My only criticism of the process is the way I was informed I wouldn't be moving forward. I got an email from the recruiter saying they would get back to me by the end of the day or first thing tomorrow.
Then at about 12pm on the same day, I get a phone directly from the recruiter.
I wasn't expecting it because she didn't email me to schedule a call. My understanding was that I would hear back from her later that day or tomorrow morning.
She informed that I wouldn't be moving forward. I asked for constructive feedback and her response was, "I have no constructive feedback." That kind of hurt because we spoke for over an hour for the life interview and I thought she would have some feedback. The call lasted less than two minutes.
