      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Calgary, AB) in Nov 2020

      Interview

First, there is a "get to know you" interview. You will talk about your accomplishments in your life and you are given the choice of what life stage you want to begin from. It's very comfortable and focused on your professional achievements. It's essentially a really long answer to "tell us about you" interview question but you speak about the timeline of your life. Next was the Technical Skills Interview. They provide you with a PDF rubric letting you know they measure for Communication, Teaching, Resourcefulness, Ability to Mult-task. They give you some practice examples and you can create your own store and you feel well-prepared going into the interview. You are providing service to 2 chats simultaneously and only have 15 minutes. They will present their problems and you'll provide a solution but the interviewer will slip in another problem that needs to be searched again. It felt like they were throwing variables which didn't properly showcase my teaching. They provided feedback that I should work on my teaching. However, I felt it was very unfair because my teaching ability shouldn't be judged based on how many curveballs they can throw at you. Resourcefulness, yes. I understand they want the best of the best but in the two days to prepare for a technical skills survey, it felt as though reading the website and knowing all the information as well as problems that could arise with simple tasks were already being thrown at you before training. For a 42 000 per year job, the interview process is extensive and they're riding the gravy train right now of having a individual hiring process which isn't an adequate reflection of people's skills and how they can be successful. It's a test of how long you can study their materials for no pay and before training and before hiring. Their hiring process could easily be biased based on their current processes and interview questions. It was over a week ago and still left a sour taste in my mouth for the company.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

How to add a Contact us page. (not listed in navigation but they'll assess you as if it is already listed in their navigation). I asked the chat person if the page was listed there and they said it wasn't, so i instructed them on how to add it there and the person on chat said it was already listed the second time around.) How to set up Pick-up options. The curveball they threw at me went against new store defaults. I practiced this and found the solution and gave the instructions on how to check off this option for businesses. Then they said that there was an error and you first had to select "multi-origin shipping" which was a completely different search topic. The store I practiced on and worked through as I was giving instructions didn't need this and the interview also made it seem like the store was old or changing options.. .just a new store adding new options which should have been resolved with my instruction.

Hi, there. Thank you for sharing your feedback. I am sorry to hear that the interview process at Shopify wasn’t as expected. The interview process is designed to get applicants familiar with the type of work they might be handling as a Support Advisor. Because of this, the process can be lengthy, as we are looking to find the best fit for the role. The Life Story allows us to get to know you as a person - it is created to be more of a conversation than an interview. Whereas the technical portion is more of a role-play to get you acquainted with the workflow of the position. The technical portion helps us to measure skill level, see how deadlines would be handled under pressure and understand your thought process. No two-days are the same as a Support Advisor, so we try to get you as accustomed with the role as possible. I am sorry to hear that you weren’t offered a position. If you’re still interested, I do hope you apply again in the future. Again, thank you for sharing.

      Interview

La entrevista incluye una llamada telefónica para conocerte, una entrevista propiamente dicha por videoconferencia, una entrevista técnica en la que tienes que realizar el trabajo y, en ocasiones, una última charla con la persona que sería tu jefe.

      Question 1

Las preguntas suelen ser sobre el propio producto, por lo que es buena idea hacerse una tienda en la plataforma unos días antes para saber cómo funciona.
