      Senior Visual Designer Interview

      7 Jan 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Toronto, ON
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Toronto, ON) in Dec 2020

      Interview

Shopify has a pretty clear-cut process for conducting interviews, starting with an initial screening call with their recruiter, then the 'Life Story' call, quite chill, followed by a series of interviews / calls depending on the position applied for. With the 'Marketing UX' roles, which this fell under, it was a "Fresh Eyes" or 'design duet' where you're tasked with critiquing a relevant project from the Shopify team (1 hour), followed by what was a more open-ended 'chat' with the hiring manager (also 1 hour) and finally an hour-long portfolio review (including time for questions at the end). For the most part, my experiences with all these stages and individuals was fairly positive and I admit I was slightly underprepared due to personal matters. Now, for some cons. The hiring manager (middle open-ended interview) was, uh, nice enough but I thought it was odd how they chose not to give very in-depth or truly insightful answers, moreso just passively shared very short, vague responses on their own work and desires for the role, seemingly intentionally leaving it up more to the candidate (myself) to engage them in a conversation that would lead to meaningful discussion, without so much of a prompt, at all. I suppose for a 'Senior' level role, this could be argued as a fair strategy but without any clear outline for the interview, it made for some awkward silences and I was somewhat put off. Not to mention, the specific position I was being considered for had shifted somewhat confusingly, as they were uncertain whether I would be in one team versus another. In any case, eventually, after a long period of more awkward conversation, the hiring manager decided to suddenly be more in command, responding with more questions of their own and the dialogue improved. Nevertheless, the experience left me feeling quite disuaded from being on their team. Felt a bit toxic, kind of a red flag. Anyway, I was expecting a rejection based on that interview alone but literally 3.5 weeks later and Shopify has not said a WORD. I followed up with the very friendly recruiter weeks ago, to no avail. It is shocking to me that in this day and age, a company like this might lead someone along to a final round of interviews and not even have the decency to write you back. Incredible. Ultimately, I accepted an even better position elsewhere, so...¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hi, thank you for posting here! I'm sorry to hear you felt the conversation in the interviews was not strictly structured from our end - this is intentional, as we like to let the candidate lead us through what they feel is most important to share. This open conversational-style discussion gives you the space to share your skills and experience from your unique point of view, and that’s what we’re most interested in. We hope to offer people to opportunity to build for the long term, so you're interviewing us too! If you have questions about what we can do for you, or how we can 10x your career, you have that space to chat about whatever you like. For feedback after an interview, we do usually try to respond to everyone as fast as possible, so I'm so sorry to hear you've not heard back from our team! I can understand how it would be frustrating to be turned down for a role and to not have feedback in return. I would usually encourage candidates to reach back out to the recruiter who interviewed them to inquire about gathering feedback, but if you've already tried this then we could take this conversation to email so that we can inquire with our talent team for you. Be sure to send us an email including as many details as you can (ie/ your interview date and the name of your recruiter), then we can begin digging into it for you. You can send us an email using this link: (https://bit.ly/2ICKkCX). Adding 'Glassdoor' as the subject link of the email will ensure we can find your email faster! Thank you again for posting, best of luck in the future!
