Senior Software Engineer Machine Learning Interview

      23 July 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Toronto, ON
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Thomson Reuters (Toronto, ON) in July 2022

      Interview

I had to undergo 4 rounds of interview for this job position. Difficulty level of each round was average, but too many screwups during the whole interview process. I was referred for this job by a friend. Even then the recruiter didn't contact me for two weeks. My friend had to repeatedly email him and escalate him just to even get the process started. Then he sent me the first hackerrank assessment with a timeline of 48 hours!!! After I completed the assessment he didn't get back to me for another 1.5 weeks (why the 48 hours deadline then?) Finally I received a call from him (this was the first time I spoke to him, yay lucky me!) and he only gave me 5mins to explain the next rounds and ask any questions I have. For the next round of interview (live coding), they would only let me provide availability for only 1 week (they would assume I don't have a full-time job already and am available to interview at any time). After multiple emails I was finally able to setup a time that fit my calendar. Over all experience for this interview was good. Although there was a pre-existing defect in the question (the bug-fix one) itself which the interviewers had to fix while my interview was in progress (lol). For the system design and the behavioural rounds, again multiple screw-ups from the recuiters. The system design round was supposed to be 60mins and behavioural 45mins. They setup 45min and 30mins back to back for those two rounds. The system design went on for 60 mins (and I was stressed during the last 15mins as it went overtime and I knew I might miss the behavioural round). Also it was a little weird as the interviewers won't let me explain any of the components of the system in detail. Finally, when I was able ready to join the behavioural round the link didn't work. And I got no response to my emails to the recuiters. So I had to ask my friend for the hiring manager's (he was the interviewer for this round as well) email and told him about the problem. He made the recuiting team reschedule the final round. After the last round I didn't hear back anything from them. The recuiter kept saying he will give me a call to let me know about the decision but went on to ghost me for a week. So I had to ask my friend about any update and got to know there's an internal candidate interviewing for the same position as well. Which means the scale might be tipped in their favour and that is totally okay. But they should have respected my time and let me know about the decision. That's the least they could do. This was probably the most unprofessional recruitment team I have ever had to deal with. If they treat referral candidates this way, I don't even want to think about the experience of other candiates. Overall it was a very negative experience. I hope the detailed feedback helps other candidates in their preparation.
