I went to my recruiting station and asked for a specific job. They assessed my abilities by taking a test called the ASVAB. After completing the test at MEPS I was able to select from a few different positions that I might like. I chose a job and went to sign my contract for that position, but it was no longer available so I had to choose another position.

Don't listen to the lies recruiters tell you fight for what you want as a job. You don't want to get stuck in a job you don't enjoy. Don't lie either they will find out.

Medical review and questions about drugs and health problems. Weight/height, urinalysis, duck walk to check motor skills. Various paperwork, to include checking ASVAB score and bonus to determine appropriate position.

Interview
Talked to a recruiter after I left college. He offered a bunch of different jobs and referred me to take the ASVAB. Took the test, a week later he informed me of all the jobs I qualified for. Took a physical ability test (run, pushups, situps), did a background check, conducted a full-blown physical and drug test, and then I was good to go.
