I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at VMware (Palo Alto, CA) in Mar 2017
Interview
The recruiter reached out to me and scheduled a phone interview with the hiring manager. It went well and I was asked to come in for an onsite interview. I met with several people from the team.
The interviewers asked primitive questions such as the ones below. These questions are outdated. One of the interviewers did not even let me complete my response and jumped to the next question looking at her computer screen. She kept doing that for each and every question.
The hiring manager asked me HR questions (such as visa status!) and again repeated outdated questions. I did not get an offer and I am thankful for that.
I applied online. I interviewed at VMware (Palo Alto, CA) in June 2017
Interview
A total of seven rounds of interview ,each 45 min long. The recruiter was good and very helpful with questions. A lot of the questions were repetitive across the in-person interviews but it gives you the opportunity to understand the work culture across various teams.
Of the seven interviews, one interview did not go well and it appeared to me that the person had decided against my resume even before we met because after the initial hello-why the change question, he remarked that 'This is not the profile I was looking for. Recruiters don't understand security. I ask for a security person and they bring in people with system hardening, encryption., data security....that's not security, you know. '
The recruiter eventually got back to me and said I was not being hired because I did not have 'methodology 1' experience. I had not mentioned this skill in the resume .
While I respect the company's right to hire who they think is the perfect candidate, I believe that they could have avoided calling me in for a second round of in-person interview after a 1.5 hour commute one-way , just to inform me that my background was not what they wanted in the first place.
