      Software Engineer Interview

      1 Oct 2015
      Anonymous employee
      San Francisco, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Yelp (San Francisco, CA) in July 2015

      Interview

Overall the process was very smooth. A recruiter emailed me and asked if I was still looking to which I said yes. She then set up a time to talk about what am looking for and then asked me about 20 CS trivia questions which was really weird cause one, they were basic CS questions but not knowing them wouldn't tell them anything about the candidate and his ability to perform and two, the recruiter didn't have a technical background so if any of the questions had alternate answers that wasn't on the cheat sheet, she wouldn't know. But after this she arranged a skype interview. The interviewer was interested about some stuff from my resume (which is really great cause most of the interviewers directly jump into coding) and then asked me to code a simple problem just to check and see if I knew how to code. I passed and had another skype interview where I was asked to code a more complex question but still not difficult. I was then invited on-site where I had 5 rounds of white board coding. All the questions were straight forward. They are looking at your thought process and not how fast you come up with a solution or if your solution is perfect. The interviewers were really nice and would also help you if you get stuck so just think out aloud. None of the questions required any advance knowledge about any complex data structures like fibonacci heaps or n-ary trees so just read the basics. Also, they are language agnostic. After this, if they decide to move you forward they will ask for 3 references and then an offer which was great.

      Question 1

Signed a NDA so will not reveal questions but will say read about how to use lists, sets, maps and read about how to sort and which data structure would be the best for the current use case. I would say most of the questions can be answered with knowledge about just the above. Key is to keep it simple.
