      Educator Interview

      4 Sept 2012
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at lululemon

      Interview

I applied for an Educator position in early summer. After inquiring in the store if they were hiring, I was directed to the website with a store number. I filled out a typical application along with 11 "Get to Know You" Questions. These questions were along the lines of how would you spend one whole day off, who you admire etc. Sending my application into the store number I received, I noticed the company was opening a new location and I sent an application there as well. The end of summer--3 months later--I heard from a recruiter that there was a group interview for the new store being held and I was invited. I turned to GlassDoor reviews and was thankful to have read that lululemon's casual really does mean casual! Most of the women were in workout gear. About 11 women were interviewed by 2 lululemon employees, one of whom was to be the new manager. We sat outside in a circle and all answered questions "popcorn style." Though we were wearing name tags, each candidate was asked to introduce herself, reveal her favorite way to sweat, and her favorite ice cream flavor. The manager mostly just listened and participated and the interview was lead by the other employee. They spoke of the lululemon culture with an emphasis on goals. We were asked what one of our short term goals were and what steps we were doing to achieve it. Additionally, we were asked to guess how a friend would describe us. Overall, very laid back and conversational. Everyone was polite and nice. Most girls were early twenties, though 3-4 were in their 40's/50's. A couple women revealed that they knew the manager/"were recruited" and had not yet filled out an application. I received an email a little over a week later asking for a second interview over coffee (the assistant manager treated). While meeting with the assistant-manager-to-be I was comfortable and enjoyed talking about the culture of lululemon, namely goals and sweating, and possibility for growth within the company. The interview lasted about an hour. At the end I asked what I should expect next and she told me I would receive a response within a few days and if not there was always an opportunity to come on as holiday help. Afterwards, I felt confident in the interview but the last comment kept replaying in my head. I sent a follow up thank you email within a few hours of the interview and the next day the assistant-manager-to-be replied that they chose to go with another candidate which gave them a full roster....I didn't get the job. Though I am disappointed I did not get the job, overall I was impressed with lululemon as a company and would consider applying for employment there in the future.

      Interview

The interview focused less on technical retail knowledge and more on personality, communication, teamwork, customer experience, and alignment with the company values and culture. The questions required thoughtful and personal answers, so preparation definitely helps. It felt like they were looking for authenticity, self awareness, and strong people skills rather than scripted answers. Advice for candidates: prepare real examples from previous experiences and practice speaking naturally on camera. Energy and communication style seem very important in the process.
