Pros

-completely remote roles offer flexibility - started on an incredibly passionate and skilled team with managers who attempted to create an environment of creativity and collaboration

Cons

The CEO, CTO, and the director of digital curriculum all serve the higher purpose of creating a white-washed, ideologically- dipped "curriculum" that can be sold to states banning CRT, LGBTQ content, and anything that might lead students to think critically.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We're glad to hear that you found flexibility in a remote role and appreciated the passion and collaboration within your team. However, we take your concerns about the curriculum very seriously. Our goal is to provide an inclusive and thoughtful educational experience that supports diverse perspectives and fosters critical thinking. We value open dialogue and will continue to ensure that our curriculum reflects those principles. Your input helps guide us in that effort.

Pros

If you work in the product department, there is flexibility, in terms of when you work. Generally as long as you make it to meetings and get your work done, you’re good. It’s fully remote so you can work from anywhere but meetings are set for Arizona time so you will need to be available during those business hours.

Cons

Pay across the board is far under market rate. Most curriculum employees are only offered contract positions. The product team is very reactive and is focused on compliance, not innovation, which is ironic since they are obsessed with labeling themselves as “#1 in innovation.” DEI are given lip service but in reality, it’s ignored in curriculum development or only performative, such as using a picture of people of multiple races. But actually including diverse figures, uncomfortable parts of history for white people are vetoed. The focus on the curriculum team is providing a curriculum that in no way challenges white supremacy. Elementary curriculum was laid off en masse in December 20 days before Christmas with no warning. Employees weren’t offered other positions and contract employees, who were the majority of the team, received no severance.

We appreciate your honesty and the time you took to highlight both the positives and areas needing improvement based on your experience at Prep. We acknowledge your concerns you’ve highlighted here to several things including the unfortunate layoff of curriculum employees We take your feedback seriously. We understand and agree that prioritizing student needs and improving our approach to inclusive excellence should always be a matter of importance to our organization. We’re committed to making meaningful changes in these areas. Thank you again for your valuable feedback; as it helps us grow and improve.

Pros

The other DPAs and curriculum specialists that I worked with were always professional, dedicated, and passionate about their work despite the horrendous work environment.

Cons

The elementary digital program for which I was hired initially started off as a wonderful experience. Everything was planned out and organized, we had a very strong team in place, and we were given opportunities to share our ideas. We were asked for our feedback and opinions. A few months in, though, things changed. No one wanted to hear our creative ideas anymore, they wanted us to just do what we were told and don’t ask about it. They were taking the advice and suggestions for the curriculum from UX (a team that had no experience in pedagogy) rather than from actual educators and subject matter experts like us. Also, promises about including social emotional learning and diversity and inclusion in the program dissipated. About five months in, leadership changed and the entire culture and environment flipped upside down. Leaders came into place that had no experience working in elementary curriculum. We went from being a very collaborative group who got deliverables done by every deadline and could self-manage our schedules independently to an authoritative atmosphere, where people were getting tracked for their behavior if they asked questions or gave opinions at meetings, and micromanaged beyond anything I had ever experienced in almost 30 years of working in education, having to document every minute worked and record every meeting for leadership to watch later. Leadership was not personable, they had no working budget for the program, they kept taking components away from the architecture rather than being innovative as ASU claims to be. Leadership continued to hire people despite their consideration of shutting down the program, which they did abruptly and with no notice to people on December 5, 2022, right before the holidays without any care of people’s financial or health benefits situation. It went from being my dream job to my most nightmarish job.
