I have been working at Aetna full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Aetna has an amazing level of diversity (ethnic and women). This diversity can be viewed through all levels of ranking. It is one of the few companies I have worked for where I forget I am a minority when I walk through the doors. Inclusion is important at Aetna and exercised in a way that is unparalleled. Differences are embraced. Collaboration between business units is noteworthy. The company also offers... flexible schedules for employees at all levels. The organization is constantly observing a program or staff achievement that equates into some type internal celebration. A majority of employees are offered some level of remote working if desired. Bonuses are very equitable and can make up for lower than market starting salaries.

    Cons

Health care benefits are VERY expensive. This is quite an irony. Pay scales fall outside of industry standards. ASK FOR THE MONEY AND VACATION TIME UP FRONT! Annual salary increases are minuscule. In addition, you will be offered only 2 weeks of starting vacation if you do not negotiate during the interview process. There are no programs aimed towards career growth and upward mobility. You must be your own... advocate for career growth. There are individuals that have worked in the same career for over 20 years. This is common at Aetna. Opportunities exist. It will be up to you to find and pursue them. CVS has acquired Aetna which could completely eradicate the amazing culture that currently exists. Depending on the office location, some offices are at full capacity and therefore have limited seating. This can result in leaders working from cubicles.

    Advice to Management

Work to protect the positive cultural benefits employees have enjoyed at legacy Aetna (prior to CVS acquisition) such as diversity, inclusion, on site celebrations and recognitions.

  9. "CVS takeover changed the company culture"

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Former Employee - Finance

I worked at Aetna full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Good company with name recognition

    Cons

The culture at Aetna has been regressive since the CVS takeover. Aetna was a very progressive company and had lots of benefits for employees and really focused on work/life balance. Now, things have gone downhill fast and there's a reason there's been a mass exodus of upper management over the last few months.

    Advice to Management

Respect your employees and understand that Aetna is a corporate company, not a retail business like CVS. Give back many of the benefits that were taken away and go back to trying to be a leader and being progressive.

I worked at Aetna full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great benefits (including onsite clinic, cafeteria, and gym); good pay; good 401(k) match; the feeling that you are helping others; opportunities for volunteering and getting involved.

    Cons

I think it depends on the department you're working for, but it really feels like many managers and team members don't live the corporate values (integrity, caring, etc.). Managers promote the worst, most toxic team members because those individuals are deemed effective even if they are not liked or respected by other team members. There was a complete lack of recognition of work/life balance, with people routinely... working insane hours, including weekends. It was difficult to get a straight answer about anything; eventually team members just took everything management said with a grain of salt, knowing that it was either untrue or likely to change at a moment's notice. In addition, the company is in a state of flux thanks to its recent acquisition by CVS, with changes happening on nearly a weekly basis. Between the lack of communication and the toxic workplace, working in my department was a pretty miserable experience. I got the impression it was different in other departments, though.
