Toxic culture, leadership akin to emotional bullying

Pros

Bonuses, healthcare, select benefits and company-sponsored events

Cons

Toxic environment, heavy politics, competitive to an unhealthy degree, extreme hours, few resources, inflexible schedules ---- No team is perfect, but the fact that Apex Leaders turns over nearly half their staff every two years is an indication of a deeply troubling workplace environment. One where hard work, dedication, and excellent results are not rewarded and underhanded leadership and office politics rule the teams' every decision. They work diligently to hide this with engineered reviews and awards, but if you speak to formers like I have recently, their experience was not positive. In my time there I earned near-perfect quarterly and annual reviews, was called out repeatedly as an exemplary "A-player" who lived the core values. Yet when I asked for professional development or any meaningful growth plan that was explicitly promised in my offer letter and at reviews, I got only backlash and retaliation. The leadership was very punishing at Apex Leaders, specifically the CEO. What he liked to refer to as 'ruthless execution' is a thinly veiled excuse for emotional bullying and manipulation. Within all layers of the company, I listened to colleagues regularly describe being at their wits end and constantly feeling like having to walk on egg shells. I felt the same. The pressure under his leadership is unbearable and if he doesn't like you or identify with you, good luck getting anywhere in that company based on merit. Unfortunately, these fear tactics breed a team largely unwilling to expose themselves by voicing new ideas, raising opposing viewpoints, or challenging the organization to improve in meaningful ways beyond simply increasing the bottom line. I did learn valuable skills in my time at the company, but the most valuable lesson I learned is there are much better places to work than Apex Leaders. Don't waste your energy.

As a VP who has been with Apex Leaders for 5+ years, I was surprised to see this post. As a member of the leadership team, I appreciate the opportunity to be part of a high growth company that values and rewards collaboration and a strong work ethic. As other posts have stated, we are a fast paced, high performing company that provides challenging opportunities with the freedom to be innovative; all of which are qualities of a team I want to be a part of. It's a great fit for me and I'm excited about where we are headed as a company.

Pros

If you are fresh out of college, need to bulk up your resume, and can keep your mouth shut this isn't a bad job for a year.

Cons

-The extremely bigoted and toxic culture that occurs with the top leaders at the company. They make offensive “jokes” and when people try to comment on the inappropriateness the response is "well I coached a gay water polo team so I understand diversity". -They will also ask for feedback, not take it, and in some cases punish individuals that provide feedback they do not like. The lower levels have to “tread carefully” in order to get what they want. I was told multiple times, as a woman, to phrase statements in the form of a question in order to seem like a “less aggressive woman”. -The pure GASLIGHTING of individuals at the company. Lying to their faces about pay and making them feel bad when they push back. They have told people the Glassdoor salaries are inflated when in reality they are not. They were recently written about in the local newspaper because of labor law violations and decided to send an email to the company lying about knowing about the violation when multiple individuals brought it up to leadership multiple times. -They will try to tell you these Glassdoor reviews are just bitter employees but the only people who stay long are upper leadership or have been chosen as the poster children for, “look at how much upward mobility Apex Leaders has!” When I left the average tenure of a Research Associate was about 4 months.

Pros

Some of the clowns on the leadership team have some HILARIOUS jokes about immigrants and minority populations which some people may find offensive.

Cons

The tech: You'll be issued a Chromebook. It will only work on your two monitors if you plug it into a certain USB-C port. The audio will be bad, and it will struggle to keep up with the 20 tabs you have open. Issues with your tech will get resolved in a day. Furthermore, the company refuses to invest in the right kind of software designed for the work you'll be doing, making the work exponentially more frustrating. Family leave: Are you pregnant? Is your partner pregnant? Are you thinking about having a kid sometime in the next year? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may want to rethink your application. Parental leave is only granted after a year of employment. I watched multiple employees make the difficult choice between expending all of their PTO to spend time with their newborn children or navigating the challenges of being a new parent while working full time. Care for the team, indeed. Remote work: Yes, you absolutely have the freedom to work from home. Of the folks who have been hired since COVID, many have not set foot in the office outside of their first few weeks of training. However, if you plan to be one of these people, also plan to be forgotten about and passed over for promotions. This isn't me grumbling about sour grapes - I came into the office regularly and received four raises and three promotions in the year I was there, while more tenured remote employees stagnated in terms of pay, roles, and social standing within the company.

Thank you for your review. We respect your observations during your time at Apex and we recognize that we have some work to do as it relates to DEI + Belonging efforts. We are striving to enhance our inclusivity efforts with an active DEI + Belonging Committee, made up of individuals who are taking the lead around diversity and inclusion programs and initiatives at Apex. The company has focused on making adjustments to recognize multi-faith holidays and practices, along with revising our hiring process by changing minimum requirements for education and reinforcing our commitment to creating an inclusive environment for all employees, beginning with our hiring process. Our growing IT team is making continuous improvements to tools and systems with the goal of maximizing efficiency and employee satisfaction. We are proud to offer a generous paid parental leave. Upholding work/life balance is a priority for Apex and each manager works closely with their employees to ensure it is achieved. As company culture has evolved over the past few years, remote work has become an integral part of our business. We strive to ensure employees who choose to work from home are equally valued and are given the same opportunities as those who are hybrid. We now have more chances for employees to interact, with a bi-yearly “Apex Summit” when out of state employees are flown in and the company spends a few days collaborating, team building, and enjoying getting to know each other.
