Good intention - poor follow through

Pros

AG is a great place with a mission of helping those facing domestic violence (and at the time, also gender based violence). Unfortunately, with years of poor management and Board members not truly in tune with both the cause and employees, the agency has never (and does not seem it will) reach its full potential. The services provided are good though and most employees can be counted on by clients.

Cons

If you have an in or essentially suck up to the Exec Director, you'll have a cushy job, and steadily increased pay. If not, you'll face slow advancement and job instability. Friendships are put above the mission and efficient agency management. Salary discrepancy is massive (for $26k for difficult & overnight shelter work, versus $60k for full time "outreach" staff). Non-profit with heavy dependence on state funding, which causes further instability.

Pros

There are two pros at this organization: the clients & the regular (non-managerial) staff.

Cons

I've never been treated so poorly at a workplace. Every day was anxiety-inducing and the whole work environment shifted depending on the mood of the manager. The management are completely closed off to hearing the ideas of staff, the people who actually work face-to-face with clients. Clients in the shelter were kicked out randomly depending entirely on the mood of the manager. If she did not like them, they would be forced to leave (often with nowhere to go). This work is hard, and there were no supports in place. When there were crises, managers disappeared and then became angry if you did not manage the crisis the "right way" according to them. Managers frequently yelled, insulted staff, and slammed doors. The whole environment was extremely volatile. I worked there for less than a year and saw over 10 people quit (many within the first few weeks) due to the management concerns. They have no flexibility in terms of work schedules or ability to work from home, even when you're in an all-day virtual conference. Management team are all friends with each other and ignore all HR violations and complaints to protect each other.
