Pros

Freedom to "work in the field" all day which allows for a flexible schedule (but must arrive at 8:30, and can't leave before 5:30 PM, even if you're work is completed for the day.) You get to choose how you spend your days. Family-owned business that make you feel like you're a part of the family, even when you're new. Very friendly staff and easy to work with.

Cons

Due to being family-owned, sometimes there's too many "chefs in the kitchen". They don't communicate with each other often, which leads to frequent miscommunications and frustrations. Only one day of training, then let you go off into the field. Very overwhelming for someone new to the field. Absolutely no room for growth. More of a stepping stone job.

Pros

Didn't work here long, but I liked it. Good exposure to journalism and getting to know the city. Super involved in the community and the staff feels like a family.

Cons

Family-owned business so some drama comes with the territory. When I was there it was still an economic downturn so the pressures were still being felt.

Pros

Lots of opportunities to meet business owners in the area.

Cons

There is zero trust in their employees and zero reward for hard work. Management acts more like baby sitters. They show up at the beginning and end of each day to ensure everyone is still there. They work full days on holidays and days before and make sure absolutely no one leaves early. The sales team is now 100 percent white males, and the only women I’ve ever seen come through were treated terribly by the female owner. As if she’s threatened. They are notorious for letting people go at the holidays, and for holding checks owed to their employees. Some who have been there for decades. They claim to be liberal but are very much greedy and sexist at heart. They bring young kids in who want to break into journalism and stick them in the sales floor with zero experience, because in sales they make them money.
