Pros

Good Tech Stack Some good people - but they'll be gone soon.

Cons

Delusional and ignorant management pushed forward the Best Place to Work strategy without any staff input because if they had, it would have been transparent, and people would have been unhappy with their recommendations. Gone are the days you'd tell your mates to come and work for Bede because it's brilliant those days are long gone and what we have now is no faith in 'leaders' who are forcing people into the office when many were told it could be remote jobs. Bede used to really care about your well-being, not anymore. It's become a policy machine with little care about the people. With redundancies made just before Christmas staff morale is at a low and then ill-timed return to office to cheer everyone up. If you want to work for Bede, just be aware you are a number, not a person, so don't speak up. With unrealistic workloads and deadlines, it's just a case of churning stuff out with no thought to what's a great product it's just getting the minimum out so we can please the parent company. Shame it's gone from such amazing days to this. With poor pay on top of everything.

Pros

Strong tech stack. The people in your teams and work closely are strong.

Cons

No confidence in management to uproot your life. Many people taken on last year told they would be fully remote and have been told they have to come in the office 2 days a week if they live within 40 miles of the company. 13 people laid off just before Christmas If you want to work here know that your voice won't be considered in any decisions to do with the staff. This is supposed to be a Software development house but almost every decision is made by a middle management layer of product and business analysts, it's pretty much a bunch of management making decisions and patting themselves on the back while the engineers have to work extra with terrible specifications and deadlines to get work out. Very poor the way the company has been changed to appease stakeholders instead of delivering great software for the market and championing the engineers.

Hi, Thanks for the feedback on some of the recent changes. Whilst I think our hybrid approach remains very light touch and flexible, and we’ve had positive feedback from a number of employees across the business, I appreciate they don’t work perfectly for everyone and I’m sorry to see it’s not a setup you’re keen on. We’ve always operated some form of informal hybrid working with our offices open for those who could travel in. Some functions were keener than others to have their employees in regularly, some were fine with a predominantly remote setup, but it was pretty ad hoc. We continue to prioritise team feedback in our decisions, and becoming a bit more structured around hybrid working was decided partly on the back of employee feedback gathered through our engagement survey. There was an ask for more clarity on this setup, which had been pretty hazy since the pandemic. We spent several months working with leaders across the business to try and structure something that worked well for Bede and made sure to announce the decision with a 3 month lead time so people had time to adjust. There will continue to be flexibility to manage around your personal circumstances, and the days in office will be mostly manager-led, rather than centrally enforced. As I invited everybody to do when this was announced, I’d be happy to discuss further and I’d encourage you to give it a go for a few months when this kicks in to see how this works for you, or have a chat with your manager if there are any concerns you have around coming into the office a couple of days a week. We always try our best to maintain a great environment for everyone at Bede. We’ve all just returned from our 3 additional Bede days off over Christmas to allow people time to refresh and we continue to offer a competitive benefits package across all locations (8% pension match, private healthcare, etc) as well as decent perks such as snacks in the office, social budgets, regular food trucks and Dominos deliveries. Everyone also received a £300 Christmas voucher as a thank you for their efforts in 2023. I’m not really sure what you mean by wage reductions, as we’ve had our annual salary review process in December which led to a wage increase across the organisation (the 3rd year in a row). Additionally in December 2022 we made a one-off winter payment to the majority of our team to support with the inflationary living cost increases that people were facing. If there is anything more we can be doing on this side I’d encourage you to reach out to the People team this quarter as we’ll be assessing our benefits looking towards a remuneration strategy update later this year. Thanks, David Head of People

Pros

Tech stack is good and other people on my team want to help me. They gave me a really good laptop to do my job and I've been given freedom to work on what I want to work on.

Cons

I was told I was going to be fully remote but now I'm being told I need to learn to drive to come into work. I'm worried because I was nervous to learn to drive so I haven't but now I'm being forced, They keep saying they will help with adjustments but I don't feel like I can adjust to driving or spending hours and hours a week on public transport. I have spoke to my manager but they say I'll need to learn to drive. I'll be looking for a new job but feel like I'll be without a job. I don't know if they will just make me redundant like they did other people before Christmas. I'm really upset because I really like the work I do and the people I work with but the changes they are making mean it isn't possible for me to do my job. I think it's worth asking if interviewing if you can have anything they tell you down in writing so you don't end up in a situation like me!!!!!

Hi, Please come and talk to me or your manager. We've worked with other employees and their managers who find coming into the office tricky for a variety of reasons and have found solutions or different working patterns based on childcare needs, caring responsibilities, and commuting difficulties. I'd hate the thought of you worrying about job security when we can find a resolution here. Especially when you enjoy the work and the team. Thanks David Head of People
