Pros

Nice website with well-designed training modules and prompt contact.

Cons

I have been "employed" with BookNook since June. It is now October and I have yet to get a class or make a dime. What they don't tell you when they hire you is that you have to do background checks in many different states before you can even take on any classes. Through this process, they give you almost no guidance, nor do they keep you up to date on your status unless you write to them and ask about it. I had to go to the police station and get three different fingerprint cards and send them to these different states. I was promised reimbursement for all this and never received it. Once you actually do get cleared, they expect you to sit at their class sign-up portal on special sign-up days and wait until a class pops up. They don't tell you what time classes will be posted so you just have hope you are there at the right time, I guess. It would appear they now have so many tutors that you essentially have to fight over classes. I cannot believe how disorganized and generally unhelpful this company is. The whole experience has been one huge waste of time and effort.

We appreciate your review and apologize for the frustration we have caused. Our compliance team is working diligently to continue to find better ways to navigate the various background check requirements that our various school partners have in place for any individuals that interact with their students (in-person or online) to ensure they are in a safe environment. We have recently created Tutor Compliance Office hours that occur 3 times/week and allow you to join an online meeting to get your questions answered in real-time by one of our team members to provide you the assistance needed to complete the background check requirement(s). Details for these meetings can be found in your hiring communications.

Pros

I believe in the product and that's why I started working for this company. The unlimited PTO is nice. I also loved the comradery between my direct colleagues that I worked with laterally in Customer Success and Implementation. They are very talented and we all stuck together and supported each other when things got challenging. I will say one positive that came out of working here was the friendships I made because we all only had each other to lean on when we were being taken advantage of or treated badly by our direct report or leadership.

Cons

The Customer Success department at this company is one of the most toxic work environments I have ever worked in due to management and leadership. My direct team lead in Customer Success had very little management experience to lead a team of CSMs and it showed. There was poor communication from them. Expectations were never set and if you ever asked questions to clarify expectations, they would gaslight you to make it look like you don't understand what your job responsibilities are. Your experience and ability to do the job well was always questioned, and if you ever said no for an ask they had of you due to bandwidth (most of the time it was a job they were required to do, but didn't want to manage), you were met with swift retaliation and bullying through condescending emails, chats, or attitude in 1:1s. This would continue for days and weeks on end through micro management and documenting everything you're doing and saying so they could build a case against you to catch you for something you are not doing, when all you want to do is your job. Some team leads are "friends" with leadership so it becomes an "us against them", when instead the focus should be on the providing white glove service to our students, districts and the program. They tell you that your self care and mental well being is a priority but they show its not when they ask you to work late nights or weekends without getting paid OT. You can't say no because they will document you for being insubordinate or ask you if you can't handle the job because "you should be able to handle this", which is another example of gaslighting. If you are a teacher looking to transition out of the classroom, this is not the best place for that transition. Growth is limited, work days are long with it being a start up and the expectations and lack of management will be just as stressful.

Pros

Like most start-up organizations, there is a spark of joy that comes with diving into the work and the initial thrill of wanting to make a big splash in the world of education, tutoring and serving students in need. Folks at BookNook are truly dedicated to the mission and enjoy collaborating with each other and building relationships with educators. The organization strives to create a good work/life balance and create a diverse and inclusive work environment.

Cons

Unfortunately, the organization has struggled financially for the past few years. There were lofty goals that went unmet, new lines of business products/services where tons of resources were invested and lost, and key partnerships were ended due to unfulfilled "promised" expectations of services. The organization, like many EdTech companies, has conducted lay-offs, twice in the past 6 months. Leadership has changed often in the past few years and each new leader has struggled mightily to turn the ship, but it's difficult to right a ship that has already taken on so much water.
