I have been working at Bupa full-time

    Pros

    Great Culture
    Flexible working environment
    Reasonable Benefits

    Cons

    Too slow to change
    Bureaucratic
Likes to retain even bad performers

    Advice to Management

There are many people in Bupa who have been there for more than 10 years. Bupa should do shakeup and remove those people as they are the biggest hurdle for any change.

They are extremely arrogant because of their knowledge not ready for any change and they can't admire and appreciate new ideas.

They also feel that only they know everything.

Advice to management: If Bupa wants to grow then remove those individuals who have been there for more than 10 years.

Advice to veterans in Bupa: There is are equally good opportunities outside Bupa as well. Grow yourselves and use your expertise elsewhere. 10 years is more than enough time for one company. Come out of your comfort zone. New people coming in Bupa come with experience and knowledge so let others also do good job.

    Pros

Opportunity to work on new technology.
    Health insurance discount.

    Cons

Lack of structure and policies within Information Services.
No progression in terms of salary or role.
High achievers receive little or no financial reward for their efforts, mediocracy is reinforced as a direct result of top management's failure to recognize and reward people financially.
Managers don't have a background in management and lack management skills.
Politics and favoritism are rampant within Information Services and people are promoted or hired on the bases of their relationship with top management and the CIO.
HR has no influence or input on role and salary progression or any other important matter in Information Services. They spend their time trying to enhance the company's image online and act as if they actually care.

I have been working at Bupa full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Work-life balance (flexible hours/work places)
    - Great people

    Cons

    - Still too much politics: project teams work in competition with each other, rather than in collaboration, those duplicating work, not knowing what others are doing
    - Too much involvement of third-party consulting companies which come and go, instead of investing to internal people

    Advice to Management

Rely more on permanent stuff rather than on third-party consultants; let your people learn and grow

I worked at Bupa full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great company purpose, respected brand.

    Cons

Needs a change in senior leadership if the organisation is to remain competitive. Company culture leaves a lot to be desired, too accepting of mediocrity, several toxic leaders setting the tone for all.

    Advice to Management

Be brave enough to make the changes you know you need to make. Remember that culture cannot be mandated, you must live and breathe your values not just make them words on a poster.

    I worked at Bupa full-time

    Pros

    * Tech is quite modern
    * Work life balance is good specially if you have a supportive manager.
    * People you work with are generally nice.
    * Health insurance discount

    Cons

    * Too many middle managers and stakeholders for any decision making.
    * Seen so much waste of money on questionable projects, on consultants etc.
    * Cronyism is rife in IT. Perception not capability matters for promotion.
    * Trying to do too many and huge changes without fundamentals in place. Not even seats for people, new office already full.
    * Risk appetite is near 0 so innovation stand stills.
    * Talks agile but all in name only.
    * Piddly and token gift cards given to people doing 20-30 years in the company. Shamefull.

    Advice to Management

It is no use comparing yourself to silicon valley companies if you don't actually put the lessons and money on the table. Compare and benchmark yourself to Australian companies and what they are doing for transformation. Some people I have seen work very hard from good of heart but not recongised that well.

    Pros

Work life balance. Good office location. Health insurance discount. Free coffees.

    Cons

Bad culture in tech team. Everything is slow. Simple tasks may take a few weeks or even months. Lack of enthusiasm of technology.
Poor leadership of the digital team. Talking big but act small.
Careless and clueless about what people's skills are and lost some great people because of that.
No real required tech/skills from the leadership, so a lot of times they will just bad decisions.

    Advice to Management

Do not play company politics. Culture of the tech team needs to change. Agile is not the answer for everything. Hire the right people first.
