Where Demand Response Goes to Die

Pros

Great HQ location at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. There are a handful of competent, dedicated energy professionals committed to the mission of reducing carbon emissions and saving the planet.

Cons

The "leadership" doesn't know how to lead. I never once heard any GM or VP involved in an actual sales cycle. For that matter, I never even heard one pitch demand response. Pipeline management is a concept lost on the entire executive team, opting instead for a fire drill at the end of the year. It creates an environment of zero accountability and no opportunity to improve as an organization. It's a lazy approach that leaves the few people who actually contribute value to the sales efforts wondering what their bosses get paid to do all year. Come commission time, don't expect to get paid accurately, or on time. If you're into giving your employer interest-free loans while they figure out how to cut a check - this is the place for you. Annual goals are handed down a few months before the yearly deadline and throttled up or down without explanation. The benefits are mediocre and not aligned to a carbon-neutral effort. There's no bump for EV ownership or solar deployment. Zero incentive for upgrading your home or transport to reduce carbon emissions. The org doesn't practice what it preaches which is a big consideration in the energy space, as most companies are providing these incentives. CPower feels more like a hedge fund that discovered it can profit from energy management, rather than a driving force for grid modernization and efforts to curb climate change.

Pros

CPower continues to lead the market in both reputation and expertise. CEO, Mike Smith provides strong leadership to innovate critical areas of the company, drive cultural initiatives that have been exciting like Sales launch and GridFuture, while preparing the company for the upcoming NRG acquisition. AI tools are also being incorporated into areas of the company with great results. It’s been good to see a renewed excitement with successful projects.

Cons

Ability to get promoted within departments is difficult, unless you quit, then you get a raise and headcount. Operations VPs-Operations and Customer Service continue be venomous and use intimidation causing tremendous stress and anxiety across a set of employees. This pair is highly protected by COO and shielded from current HR scrutiny, as HR reports to COO. Yet, others outside this trio receive the full wrath of legal. Affected employees are eager to engage with NRG HR to address and eradicate next year.

Morale on the decline

Pros

Energy is a hot industry right now and CPower has a strong grip on the market. Ability to work from home is great. Company has a firm look to the future. Pay is ok, bonuses are nice but not guaranteed. Work is challenging. There's some excellent people trying their best to elevate everyone.

Cons

I started a few months before the new CEO came in. Employee survey the first year I was there had cratered from the year before so they did try and implement a feedback system. I don't think they really listened though or cared since most criticism is about leadership. Employee churn is up and more than half of the company has only been there less than 3 years. Morale is on the decline and you can see it. Very cliquey, especially in the operations group and not much accountability for senior leadership. The best idea wins out is not a concept at CPower. It's MY idea wins because I've been here longer. It's why there is a CRM system that is barely usable, because a bunch of VPs and Managers who think they know better than people who actually have to use the system had all the input. The VP of Customer Service has on multiple occasions unfairly maligned so many people behind their backs for no reason other than to make themself look better. They're also one of the reasons why the aforementioned CRM system is half baked. The sales group has a frat house mentality and is seriously off putting.
