Pros

Remote friendly, mac laptops provided

Cons

The company has a recurring hire-and-fire cycle, which creates a sense of instability even after candidates go through multiple interview rounds. Performance evaluations often feel subjective and inconsistent, with feedback varying depending on management rather than being tied to clear, measurable expectations. The CPO's management style contributes significantly to this toxic environment. Leadership can be highly micromanaging, limiting engineers' autonomy and slowing decision-making.

Toxic work environment

Pros

Within the business, there are wonderful team members who stick together, treat each other respectfully and support each other within the work environment by regularly going above and beyond for one another.

Cons

Leadership: In my experience, and consistent with other reviews on this page, the CEOs displayed a pattern of bullying and belittling staff. I experienced a significant lack of direction, alongside aggressive outbursts that negatively impacted my health and wellbeing. On a regular basis, leadership belittled me in front of my peers, frequently used inappropriate language in meetings, and engaged in abusive and uncomfortable arguments that staff were forced to witness. Overall, the behaviour displayed by leadership was the most distressing workplace behaviour I have encountered in my professional career. False external reporting: On multiple occasions, I was asked by both CEOs to enhance information being presented to external parties. This made me extremely uncomfortable, as I felt that if the information were later questioned or uncovered, it could have severely damaged my professional reputation, future employment opportunities, and industry relationships. Professional development: Cadmus is a small, remote-first startup and, during my tenure, there was no budget allocated for staff professional development or upskilling. Like many small businesses, costs are understandably tight; however, I did not experience the professional development, mentorship, or career progression opportunities that I had previously experienced within medium-to-large enterprises, where there is often greater investment in people and stronger access to senior leadership guidance within a collaborative work environment. Had I known this prior to joining, I would not have accepted the role, as I believe it limited my ability to grow and develop professionally despite my hard work and commitment. Overall experience: My health and wellbeing significantly deteriorated during my time at the company. There was little investment in staff development, the workload was excessive, and the volatile behaviour displayed by leadership, combined with concerns around integrity and workplace culture, made the role not worth the market-rate salary provided.
