The first red flag should have been me getting promised a certain salary initially and then only being offered a lesser one upon a job offer. But I was young and naive and took the opportunity.
I was hired as a social media associate and began full-force in the company as I had little to no training from my upper level supervisor. Unfortunately I learned very quickly how cliquey the whole company is, and how you get treated when you don't fit in.
Despite performing well at my actual role, I was continually asked to do things outside of it and my level of expertise-- for example, code the company website when I clearly said I had very limited understanding of code and was unable to do what was asked of me. When told that the CEO was getting impatient with how long the website was taking me, I had no choice but to put my actual client work on hold to attempt to please him. Shortly after getting praise for my actual work, I was led into a boardroom and fired.
During the conversation they told me that even though I was excellent at doing my ACTUAL SOCIAL MEDIA job, the CEO was frustrated because of the website situation. Which is still completely unfair. CEO also, instead of doing the letting go himself, chooses to hide in his office while someone else does it. Was also told I was constantly late-- I arrived at 9???-- and that the CEO had a problem with it because "some people come in early and stay very late." However, this was not brought up to me at all beforehand.
Company makes NO sense in how it is run, extremely two-faced staff and management, inflated job titles, horrific turnover rate.
Please, young PR, social media, digital media hopefuls-- Do not waste your time at this company. There is no room for growth or improvement, the systems they use for social media management are archaic, you will learn little to nothing regarding paid social media, you are treated as disposable and the salary is not at all worth it.
