Pros

Beautiful Campus & Great Students!

Cons

I worked in the Student Life department at Baker University and the overall experience was undermined by a lack of structure, consistency, and support. There was extremely high staff turnover, and because of that, staff often operated without clear supervision or leadership. Staff meetings were virtually nonexistent, and there was little to no communication about departmental updates, expectations, or changes. As a result, important information was often missed, and decisions felt reactive instead of strategic. The work environment was so relaxed that it became disorganized. There were no consistent rules, procedures, or accountability measures for staff. This created confusion and made it difficult to understand what was expected of us. Without leadership or clear guidance, the workplace often felt chaotic and unstable. Staff also felt unappreciated and not recognized for hard work. In addition, professional development was not a priority. There were no structured opportunities for training or growth, and very little investment in long-term staff development or retention. The lack of communication, guidance, and structure made the experience frustrating and unsustainable. I would not recommend this role to those seeking a professional or growth-oriented work environment.

Pros

I worked in the Marketing and Communications department at Baker University and genuinely enjoyed collaborating with students, faculty, and staff across campus. The campus community is made up of caring people who believe in the university’s mission, and several colleagues in the department were talented, thoughtful, and committed to producing high-quality work. When expectations were clear, the projects were both rewarding and creative. Baker University has strong people and significant potential across campus.

Cons

The Marketing and Communications department would benefit from greater consistency and organization. Priorities often shifted without clear explanation, and meetings were occasionally canceled or rescheduled with little notice. Communication from leadership could be more transparent and proactive, particularly when it comes to setting expectations and providing feedback. There was also a reliance on AI that often felt unnecessary and, at times, detracted from the quality of the final product. Direction on projects was frequently unclear, and internal systems and tools were not always used effectively, or in some cases at all, which led to confusion, additional work, and an overall challenging work environment. The department would benefit from clearer structure and more consistent communication to better support staff success. With greater transparency and consistency from leadership, it could become a much stronger and more positive environment for employees and in supporting other departments across campus.
