Pros

The art. No doubt about it. It really gets me through the day when I am feeling down. There are also some amazing creative people in education and visitor services, but unfortunately they are not very happy either.

Cons

I have considered writing a review here for a while but I have hesitated because it did not seem very productive…after reading through the reviews though, I have to say I feel compelled to write because all of the 5-star reviews are clearly phony and probably written by HR. Speaking of HR, the times that I have had to go down to HR (literally “down to HR” – they are buried in a dungeon - which probably explains their negative demeanor) I have been treated like an inconvenience – once because I dared interrupt someone busy on her tablet doing Facebook. A deeply unhappy cabal of ladies down there. But like in most organizations, HR is insignificant and the real problem with The Brooklyn Museum is many of the managers and executive staff. The executive staff is disconnected, highly compensated, and willing to do anything to hold onto their jobs – including throwing underlings under the bus. I have some friends in other museums and I understand they are all filled with silos but The Brooklyn Museum has to be the worst. I have literally seen people in my department stonewalled by other departments – we’re all on the same team, people! But that’s what happens when fear is the motivator for unqualified people to hold onto their jobs. I know I have stayed too long and I am going to join the exodus of many, many people who have left this year!

Thank you for your feedback. Please know that Human Resources does not write any of these reviews, only monitors them as feedback. I am always open to a dialogue with all staff regarding current issues within our institution, especially now that our new Director has started and wants to make employee issues a top priority. My door is always open in HR for these conversations and confidentiality will be maintained. I thank you for bringing this to my attention and would appreciate the opportunity to work towards making your experience with us a positive one. If you would like to have a private dialogue regarding these matters, I encourage you to contact me in HR. Thank you.
