Pros

Strong mission & culture: EF has a clear, globally oriented mission in education and travel, which I found inspiring. Many colleagues share values around learning, inclusion, and cross-cultural exchange. Talented, friendly teams: Generally coworkers are supportive, creative, and motivated. It’s easy to find collaborators and people who are passionate about what they do. Travel & perk opportunities: There are perks related to travel, benefits, health insurance, and some flexibility. These helped offset some of the trade-offs. Room for visibility & leadership experience: As a director, you get to work across regions or products, taking on high-impact initiatives. It’s a place where ambitious people can grow, given you advocate for yourself.

Cons

Compensation & equity issues: Salaries (especially for higher levels) are often perceived as below market, especially given the workload and responsibilities. Raises/promotions sometimes seem slow, and bonus or equity isn’t always clearly aligned with output. Management / structure issues: Some ambiguity in roles, inconsistent communication from senior management, and lack of decisiveness. The organizational structure can feel rigid or bureaucratic in parts, which makes it harder to move quickly. Unclear or limited upward mobility: While growth is possible, in practice it seems dependent on openings, visibility, or connections rather than a clear, standardized path. Sometimes people take on more scope without a commensurate title or compensation change.

Pros

You get to choose your tour and recruit the students you want to bring. The paid chaperone ratio is 6:1, so it is very manageable. The tours are great and the local experts are wonderful.

Cons

Company support is variable. There is high turnover and new consultants are very sales motivated and don't always get the nuances of your school or community group. I have had some WONDERFUL concusltants, but they have always been promoted before I get to work with them again.
