Pros
I’m from Expressive Therapy (music, art, recreation, occupation, yoga). I enjoy leading groups here, as long as you interact with other staff, you will never feel alone, even if you are the group facilitator. Each unit has techs and nurses that watch the milieu, help keeping you safe. The Expressive Therapy department has other therapists you can talk to/have supervision with, but you also work independently with charting, completing individual assessments, and group prep. The work load is spread evenly each day, and if someone is behind, the team is willing to help. Overall, the team and director are really friendly and flexible with scheduling. Most staff around the hospital are as well.
Cons
This line of work is tough. You have to have a strong head on your shoulders. You often have to think on your feet, accommodating for patient behaviors or active crisis. Interacting with the other staff members, such as mental health techs, social workers and nurses, is essential to being comfortable on the units. Otherwise you may feel alone or unsafe.
