A rudderless ship with no sense of direction - Sales & Service Associate NFU Mutual Agency Network Employee Review

Pros

Fellow colleagues are generally supportive and relationships with policyholders positive

Cons

Head Office and managers have no idea what it is like to work in a commissioned agency. Delegated compliant tasks for agency staff with limited knowledge, understanding, experience or time to undertake correct procedures. Unrealistic targets set by newly appointed senior managers from large private insurance companies with little comprehension of why NFU Mutual has a high reputation for service. An increasing belief by senior managers that sales takes precedence over service, despite protests to the contrary. An increasingly disillusioned workforce who are fed up with high workloads with low rewards. Many experienced agents being replaced by people with little or no experience of farming or insurance. Neighbouring agencies fighting over good risks to the detriment of company cohesion and morale. Poor rating leading to uncompetitive premiums and time wasted by agency staff and underwriters in negotiating discounts.

Pros

It’s a decent place to get initial experience in insurance or sales, and the NFU Mutual brand name looks good on your CV. The staff team were supportive and friendly, and it helped me build basic industry knowledge.

Cons

The agency model is completely different from NFU Mutual Head Office, and that becomes clear very quickly. The salary is extremely low for a sales‑driven role and the commission structure is almost non‑existent. There is no option to work from home, even though the role could easily allow it. Staff are often treated like children rather than adults, and you’re expected to ask permission to use your phone, even when not dealing with customers. Training and progression are barely invested in, and development opportunities are promised but rarely delivered. Management behaviour can feel unprofessional, and decisions tend to prioritise their own interests rather than the team’s wellbeing or growth.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review. We’re really pleased to hear that your role helped you build your initial experience in insurance and sales, and that you were supported by a friendly team – that’s something we know makes a real difference early in someone’s career. For anyone reading your feedback, it’s also helpful to clarify that NFU Mutual operates through a UK‑wide Agency Network, with each agency run by a self‑employed Agent. As each agency is an independent business they have their own approach to areas such as pay, working practices, training and day‑to‑day management. As you’ve highlighted, this can feel quite different to working within an NFU Mutual team. That said, we’re sorry to hear that aspects of your experience didn’t meet your expectations. We want people across NFU Mutual and our Agency Network to feel trusted, valued and able to develop, so it’s disappointing to hear this wasn’t your experience. We really appreciate you sharing your thoughts and suggestions, and we’ll ensure this feedback is passed on. We wish you every success in your future career and, if you’d be open to sharing more about your experience, please feel free to email us in confidence at careersfeedback@nfumutual.co.uk.

Pros

The larger company care about looking after their customers and providing a good consultative service. The products themselves are good.

Cons

Amateur and lazy performance targets, not based on data. Inadequate onboarding.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of working in an NFU Mutual agency. It’s great to hear you found the work interesting and recognised the strength of our products and customer-focused approach. As our Agency Network is made up of independently run businesses, employees are directly employed by local Agents. While approaches to onboarding and performance management can vary, Agents are continually looking at ways to strengthen both across their teams. We really appreciate you sharing your feedback and wish you all the very best for your future career.
