Pros

I started the first few years at NHS SC loving my job. It was close to home, the office was nice & there was promise of good opportunities. At first my manager was always supportive.

Cons

My manager’s attitude changed after some struggles with mental health. I had a CIPS course approved which was then taken away because of mental health which is clear discrimination. Then the bullying just got worse. I followed all the appropriate processes & then raised a formal grievence against my manager (this would have been the 4th raised against the manager for identical reasons). Whilst conducting the grievance I had no other option but to be off work on half pay for 3 months. In summary the treatment towards staff with any mental health issues is atrocious.

Pros

Generally teammates are nice There are good health benefits and efforts to improve wellbeing and mental health Amazing culture of being able to reach out to colleagues and senior leads for advice, support or coaching The outlook for future does look interesting and exciting - and will continue to do so if there aren’t the same budget cuts others NHS orgs face

Cons

Still an air of bureaucracy and targets-based/performance micromanaging Which goes counter to some of the mental health promotion done if managers are just undoing any progress every meeting There’s not many opportunities for ups-killing and time for self-directed learning. No protected hours, or initiatives and skills training to support junior colleagues in progression. There’s lots of pointing out what may have been done wrong, but rarely a time, outside the big monthly meetings, to say well done to colleagues for picking up something fast, or engaging with other colleagues positively.
