The more butt you kiss, the higher you'll make it up the ladder. This even holds true if you don't actually do anything except run around sucking up all day. The people who are actually working hard can't move up because all the 'upward' spots are filled with brown nosers. People are extremely territorial and don't actually care what other people can add to the conversation unless it's going to directly benefit their ability to kiss more butt. You work really hard and don't get compensated well for it. I will say, at least it's work that I enjoy doing which helps.
