Pros

Should you be lucky enough to actually have a good manager (they are few and far between) you can learn a lot about brick and morter retail and merchandising.

Cons

They promote people without any management training and never get around to training them. Terrible managers are kept on for years (even when those under them consistently leave) and even promoted. I reached out to my VP multiple times that I was having issues with my manager and was ignored and patronized. Culture is extremely catty and unsupportive. Assistants have zero ownership of their businesses, are expected to work ridiculous hours, and aren't compensated fairly. One of my coworkers was managing 60% of the business as an assistant while her buyer spent all day planning her wedding. Upper management changes their minds on a whim and expects everyone to just follow suit, a couple months later they want to know why it happend - there's no accountability on upper management. The office is outdated, the company has zero drive to innovate or get with the times, and honestly. For the record, I resigned and left on good terms. Since then I know over a dozen people who have followed suit. They treat their assistant buyers horribly and expect them to just accept it. They also refuse to negotiate on salary unless you threaten to leave and have another offer in hand.

Pros

All of my coworkers were wonderful. No high school drama. Boss was flexible and understanding, although he always liked it if you said you could work more hours. The employee discount is pretty awesome. The work wasn't bad and rude customers were rare.

Cons

There was pressure to come in even when you were sick. Pay wasn't the greatest; it usually stayed ahead of minimum wage, but by no means kept up with inflation. Visits from corporate often meant a new change in procedures that had been working and demands that were somewhat unreasonable given the constraints of the layout or number of employees available.

Pros

Even though this is with my store specifically I got really lucky with my coworkers. Every season change there is 40% off for about a week other than that is 20%. They also have scholarship opportunities.

Cons

It’s a really physical job, sometimes it’s so busy that you can’t even take a break especially during Christmas season, you WILL debate working there during that time. The store hours are horrible and since most of the time were understaffed we won’t leave until almost midnight just cleaning up.
