The job itself was good, but the lack of communication and lack of leadership and management were deal breakers. - Senior Product Consultant Sephora Employee Review

Pros

If you are a makeup junkie, this is a great place to work for the job itself. You have access to a lot of high end makeup, fragrance and skincare brands and you can get it all with a 25% employee discount. Helping women with advice on how to enhance their looks and improve their skin is very rewarding. First dibs on new products is always good. Easy access because these stores are all free standing stores, so there is no walking through a mall to get to Sephora, its right there when you open the front door.

Cons

Management is the downside to the whole experience. This is suppose to be a "marriage" between Jcpenney and Sephora...right. The store manager I had has worked for Jcpenney since she was 16 years old. Didn't know anything else and definitely does not know how to treat employees. The communication between store manager and beauty manager was non-existant and store manager would do things that went against Sephora standards. On Friends and Family Day 2010, Sephora Inside Jcpenney made more money than any other store in the United States and all the associates in Sephora were promised fleece jackets by the store manager and never followed through on that promise. Nothing like making a staff feel appreciated. Very small (only 950 sq ft.) department, very hard to move around. I could go on and on about the downside, but there will always be a downside in any job.

Pros

fun getting gratis and hosting in-store events, meeting brand ambassadors/managers, socializing with clients

Cons

manager created a weird environment -- coaching moments were sometimes extremely aggressive for a retail environment; strict on not applying makeup to clients unless they purchase a service. once made me move from a disabled client quickly because I was "spending too much time with them" and to further boost the store sales. felt extremely unethical.
