Stress without benefit - Senior Actuarial Trainee Spence & Partners Employee Review

Pros

Great way to be stressed out and overworked as the senior management claw desperately for growth in a shrinking industry

Cons

Overworked for little benefit. Friends with the same role in larger firms and in related actuarial fields have much better work life balance. They also get opportunities to progress up ranks of a larger organisation, with potential to diversify their skill set more. Not here though. Also pay is bad in NI but that's not limited to S&P.

Pros

Fast paced working environment with a flat structure in place throughout the company allowing interaction and collaboration between all levels of employees.

Cons

There are not many down sides that come to mind. Very occasional late nights and early mornings. As an intern I was not included in the bonus pool.

Pros

Steady paycheck. Free basic lunch once a week, which was a nice touch.

Cons

Meetings were often dominated by one or two voices, with limited room for others to speak. Bringing up new ideas or technical best practices wasn't always welcomed — could feel like input was dismissed rather than discussed. Concerns raised by staff weren't always followed up on or acted on. Overall, it wasn't a culture where speaking up felt safe, and that affected morale across the team.
