Pros

1. Work from home for three days each week after one year 2. Generous PTO - four weeks with an option to buy a fifth week back 3. 5% match on 401k - they will also contribute a match to your 401k if you are making payments to your student loans instead contributing to your 401k

Cons

1. High workload expectations. Many people take shortcuts in their duties or work off the clock to keep up. 2. There is a looming threat of performance plans as a result with several people on performance plans at a time within the department. 3. If you do well, expect for more work to be piled on. 4. The culture of the department is a “never enough” mentality. Regardless of your success in your role, be prepared to be berated still with opportunities to improve. 5. There is no company loyalty to employees. Employees, including those who “succeed” in the role disappear regularly with no word from management. 6. Several people will be on short term disability at a time due to mental stress from the job. Not only is this a concern from the mental stress itself, but it also results in higher workloads for the rest of the team, further contributing the stress of everyone else.

Pros

We receive continuous training to stay up to date with new state regulations and market trends. My colleagues make the day go by quickly. The benefits are very reasonable. There is room for career growth if you know how to network. I appreciate their consistent push for community volunteer opportunities.

Cons

The personal lines department seems to be falling apart right now. Issues with the internal systems are resulting in underwriters doing multiple jobs and becoming a dumping ground for all agent issues even if they aren't underwriting related. I don't feel that the directors are truly expressing to the senior leadership team the impact that all these issues are having on the mental health and quality of life for the employees that are on the front lines trying to maintain a good reputation for the company. It's sad to see how quickly this department has gone downhill and the amount of quality underwriters that are jumping ship for different departments or different companies all together. What's even sadder it that no one with authority seems to care, or listen, when concerns are brought forth. I truly advise anyone considering applying for any position within the personal insurance department to hold off until things start to change - it's not worth the mental anguish that you'll experience.
