Pros

Very large company but a small feel.

Cons

The department I worked in hired girls oddly often. After years they eventually found the department had a bias on hiring girls. I spent years being under paid along with the other men in that department because I was a guy and younger... They eventually told me I was paid less but did nothing about it. Basically told me it might be unethical but not illegal so they won't do anything. I was told to send inaccurate files to the state regulators because it would be to much work to fix and the regulators most likely wouldn't question it. I was also reprimanded for pointing out inaccurate files to the state insurance bureau where Travelers had to refund hundreds of customers because they over charged their policies (this happened twice over 4 years) I was told numerous times that I am a millennial and don't know what I'm doing and to just follow their orders. They calculated that they wouldn't be audited so it was ok. Management is smart and tell subordinates to do this so they can claim ignorance. I've seen abuse all over travelers. I saw abuse at work, family members complain about domestic abuse online and people are called unkind names all the time. I bought this up to Management and they did agree things could be better but did little to nothing about the specific example I brought up. They even told me not to read the news paper where managers were mentioned. I felt like their end goal was to hide their problems. They only take it seriously when you hire a lawyer. Additionally, The company sent out a letter which said they are reorganizing leadership positions based on race and are going to take race into consideration in the hiring process. I was shocked when the CEO said this since this is highly illegal.

Pros

We receive continuous training to stay up to date with new state regulations and market trends. My colleagues make the day go by quickly. The benefits are very reasonable. There is room for career growth if you know how to network. I appreciate their consistent push for community volunteer opportunities.

Cons

The personal lines department seems to be falling apart right now. Issues with the internal systems are resulting in underwriters doing multiple jobs and becoming a dumping ground for all agent issues even if they aren't underwriting related. I don't feel that the directors are truly expressing to the senior leadership team the impact that all these issues are having on the mental health and quality of life for the employees that are on the front lines trying to maintain a good reputation for the company. It's sad to see how quickly this department has gone downhill and the amount of quality underwriters that are jumping ship for different departments or different companies all together. What's even sadder it that no one with authority seems to care, or listen, when concerns are brought forth. I truly advise anyone considering applying for any position within the personal insurance department to hold off until things start to change - it's not worth the mental anguish that you'll experience.
