Pros

USAA provides a great service to its customer base, and you can go to work knowing what you're going to be doing most of the time. The benefits are great. Good luck finding any other company with 8% matching. Great amenities onsite and perks outside of work. Exposure to a lot of aspects of insurance and financial institution inner workings. Great guest speakers. Developing a social circle at work through projects and inter-company events helps a lot. The younger employees stick together.

Cons

Constant re-orgs create chaos and schisms within teams and areas. A lot of management gets to where they are by being "yes-men/women" and not necessarily knowledge or capabilities. During the past years many employees went from complacent to paranoid when the CEO announced that layoffs would not occur, but call center personnel would be cut and relocated. IT and business personnel began to disappear without much explanation leading to further paranoia. Some layoffs were likened to terminations to lessen the paranoia, but most people saw through the rouse. You can be let go for almost anything. It's "just a job." The city of San Antonio is horrible. Traffic is horrible. Most people are underinformed and it translates to a lot of the personnel you work with when most don't know what's going on outside of their own cubicle. Too conservative. Resembles Brave New World at times. Any form of "out there" questions are met with positive reactions, but brought up as a problem in your one-on-ones. One on ones can be "verbal warnings" without any notice whatsoever.
