Toxic management culture and lack of HR support - Data Scientist Walmart Employee Review

Pros

Some talented coworkers and opportunities to learn depending on the team. Compensation and benefits were competitive.

Cons

Management culture was highly toxic and driven by fear rather than collaboration. Managers frequently created a hostile work environment through micromanagement, inconsistent expectations, poor communication, and retaliatory behavior toward employees who raised concerns or pushed back. HR and senior leadership were not effective escalation channels. Concerns raised about management behavior were either ignored, minimized, or handled in a way that protected leadership rather than employees. This created low morale, high stress, and high turnover within the team. There was little accountability for managers, limited transparency in decision making, and employees often felt unsupported during conflicts or performance discussions. In my experience, the culture discouraged honest feedback and psychological safety.

Pros

Advancement opportunities, great at developing skills, great place to learn a skill and grow your resume, or grow with the company.

Cons

Understaffing issues negatively affects all parts of their business. However, Walmart has increased their minimum hourly rate with hopes to attract more committed employees, and retain better employees.
