Pros
N1 presents an incredible place for anyone hoping to advance their data science, analytics, or ML skillset. There are endless possibilities for what you can learn and accomplish on the data science team at N1. I started as a generalist, conducting analysis within Jupyter notebooks and visualizing data with Python libraries like matplotlib, Altair, seaborn, and plotly. If I thought it would be useful to build a machine learning model to conduct an analysis or to present an idea to a client, I had the greenlight to do so. If I wanted to build a commandline accessible python library to automate a data pipeline, I had the greenlight to do so. Being able to try all of these different things allowed me to find out which data domain I actually wanted to specialize in, and then I felt that I had the full support of my manager to pursue specialization in that field. The freedom you have to use the tools and approaches you want to use is extremely refreshing, and it leads to a ton of professional and technical growth.
You will also learn about healthcare rapidly. This company is filled with people who have been in the healthcare industry for over a decade and have developed an extremely strong understanding of how it works.
Lastly, one of the biggest strengths of N1 is the people. I developed a lot of great friendships at this company, and had a lot of admiration and respect for my coworkers. People were smart, hard-working, and fun to be around.
Cons
It is a startup, so it comes with startup challenges. Much of the freedom that I described in the pros section could be viewed as cons to those who do not like ambiguity. If you are hoping to have your tasks spelled out for you, this might not be the place for you. Additionally, startup life can sometimes come with a late night here and there. This is not common anymore at N1, but there will be occasional fire drill that you need to work late on.
The senior leadership at this company can also come across as intimidating, but it is only because they say what they mean and don’t hold back on constructive feedback.
I genuinely think that the cons of startup life can be viewed as pros in many ways. How many times do you get the opportunity to get a ton of autonomy and exposure to senior leadership so early in your career? This job catapulted my professional development.
