I have been working at GHD full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Some great people work in the Brisbane office, really good technical capability and excellent projects, fun team dynamic in some teams. Flexible working arrangements and gender and cultural diversity, inclusivity, are not just buzzwords they are starting to be realised at the brisbane office.

    Cons

Overworking yourself is encouraged and is a part of the culture unfortunately. “Build your personal brand”. Shareholders looking after shareholders during covid19 with dividends paid despite juniors being forced to take leave without pay :( environmental “commitment” is toothless. Embaressing to have to walk past adani protesters everyday for 3 months when you thought you were working for a progressive company.

I worked at GHD full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The first 'pro' is that you can leave. The second 'pro' is that this is the worst place you will ever have to work. As such, when you do leave, it is all uphill from here. The third 'pro' is that wherever you go next, you will also be better paid. The fourth 'pro' is that if you stay with management consulting, you won't have to ever again cross paths with the muppets that make your working life a misery. No-one else wants them, and in most cases, they know it. The final 'pro' is that if you are a bully, you have found one of the few workplaces that in the 21st Century, rather than manage you out, will not only tolerate you, they will regularly promote you and others like you. You won't ever have to look over your shoulder with fear and trepidation again. Any complaints will be swept under the carpet. You are at home!

    Cons

To list all the downsides of this abomination would be the work of a lifetime. Seriously, there is a book in this and a stack of MBA case studies. So, let's focus on those facets that are indeed world-class. The most toxic culture I have ever observed. The culture is as far from that of a professional workplace that I have ever observed. It has taken root from the top down. Everyone knows it, people discuss it, lament it and leave because of it. Pity that nobody who can change it has the will to do so. A less impressive leadership group would be challenging to find. Whether it be understanding the business or understanding the work, this group just isn't up to scratch. Awful reports and presentations. Engineering firms are great at......engineering. No training or development of juniors. Not a surprise really given the pedigree of the leadership when it comes to professional advisory services. A little hard to teach what you don't understand.
