Pros

There was nothing good about working here.

Cons

Very poor pay for what you are expected to do. There is a way too much expenses spent by staff taking clients out for coffee and /breakfast/lunch etc. Client fund is open to abuse by staff. A certain team leader is a notorious bully which the HR department seem unable to do anything about. Good staff have resigned and gone to other homeless services in Galway because of this. There is a culture of laziness amongst the higher paid members of social care staff who have been there many years and are on significantly higher pay per hour than the newer, lower paid staff. Pay is a contentious issue, if you change jobs you go back to the starting salary in the new position. Shift premiums are not in line with other homeless services in Galway. There is a desperate lack of proper supervision. Issues of client violence are not addressed properly. There is a distinct clique when starting in a new service within the service, staff are unwelcoming. Staff who have been there long term are burnt out, miserable and don't care, they are only there for the good salary they are on as a result of long service. The good staff are not valued at all. There is no opportunity for personal and professional development. There is no thanks or recognition given for good work. I do not recommend GSC. They do not value staff and do nothing to address the bullying culture within the organisation. Not a charitable organisation by any means!

No value for staff

Pros

Great place to gain experience. Good atmosphere among staff, very supportive and friendly. Very rewarding job when working frontline, even though it can be extremely challenging, you can see you make a difference. Very good and strong group of staff that are members in the union dedicating a lot of time and effort in improving working conditions.

Cons

I worked for more than 8 years and saw the change in management. Very disappointed with the new corporate model as opposed to what it used to be, a more caring model for both clients and staff. Salaries are considerably lower for new staff, even relief staff who had been working for years would be placed at the lowest point with a new contract. Management does not value staff's experience or good work and does not support professional development.

Little flexibility or compassion for staff members

Pros

Alot of dedicated and professional staff members working in a very challenging environment with homeless people

Cons

The organisation is very top heavy and has changed its model of management in recent years from a community based charity to a buisness model with little compassion or empathy for staff members. Very little flexibility for staff members and big differences in salaries of management compared front line staff. Recently refused all parental leave of employees citing a staff shotage. Very low staff morale. Salaries have reduced for all new staff members entering the organisation.
