Do your homework before accepting a position

Pros

Being able to help others in need on a large scale, by working with national non-profits is the biggest positive of GoodUnited. You end each day knowing you've put some good back into the world.

Cons

Leadership is tone deaf to issues they've created. They reward their "favorites" and are loyal to them to a fault. When the favorites lose revenue, contribute to a very negative company culture, and treat others with a lack of respect, the favorites get promoted or moved to another position. If you speak up with concerns, the "open-door policy" that is bragged about, comes back to bite you. Be careful what you say, and whom you say it to. The co-founders claim that they want everyone to have an equal voice in the room, all ideas are important, no matter what your position is. However, when things aren't going the way the co-founders expect them to they yell in staff meetings and blame the tribes on needing to "put more time in the office." Their virtues of "Do less, better" and "Fiercely take care of one another" go out the window immediately. There is no diversity at the company. Every full time employee is white, and all of the people in leadership positions are men, except for one woman. Layoffs have been happening for over a year and a half now. Two years in a row, they have laid off people the week of Christmas, and both of those rounds of layoffs included their only diverse hires. Budgeting adequately and paying attention to the overall financial health of the company don't seem to be a priority. Unfortunately, this impacts all of the employees who make it through each round of layoffs; their mental health, their capacity to do quality work, and their work/life balance.

Pros

-daily lunch provided by company (no longer offered) -downtown Charleston office -nimble work environment -friendly employees -professional development is top of mind

Cons

Layoffs after layoffs after layoffs. This company kept restructuring while I was there and has minimized their staff to a skeleton crew. It’s been a while so maybe it’s changed, but nobody felt job security and the clients were well aware of the internal turmoil. Was hired as a hybrid employee and it was made clear (by whispers and passive comments) that this was not okay. Most employees felt like it was a perk used to get people in the door and not something that was actually supposed to be used.

Pros

People at lower levels actually care for each other

Cons

The leadership lacks prior work experience and is unfamiliar with effective team leadership and employee satisfaction. While great at delivering speeches at parties and external events, the leadership lacks substance. They advise other startups, but themselves lack experience, direction and frequently shift priorities, often deflecting blame onto employees for failures. Employees are told that unless they work 70 hour weeks, they aren't moving the needle. The company has undergone numerous rebranding efforts and keep changing what they actually do. The company lacks genuine concern for the nonprofits they support, prioritizing $$$ over social impact. The company completely lacks diversity and doesn't really care about the employees career growth. Valuable employees have been let go over time, and many more have recently been told about their short runway. This has instilled uncertainty and diminished confidence in the company's future among the workforce. The cofounders don't seem to see eye to eye anymore. Everyone sees the lack of direction and is looking for a way out.
