Pros
The content of my work is enjoyable, can get very busy and I put in more hours, but my manager makes sure I take that time back. Many lovely colleagues, and are socialable if that's your sort of thing. opportunities for secondments. My manager and my director are supportive and kind and encouraged me to progress, I'm lucky I have the good ones. Office location on a number of underground and bus routes. Offices are not modern and can be a little cold but have seen worse!
Cons
As many poor managers as good ones, pot luck, my old manager dreadful but been promoted now . Some areas have a bullying culture. This goes to the top as I've seen the top councillor and the chief executive speak to staff and senior managers trying their best in a very rude and belittling way. Perhaps they're stressed but it's not good. The council have a higher than average staff turnover, though this isn't in my area. IT can be frustrating. An old fashioned council. Don't outwardly promote home working, I home work on occasion due to my manager but the culture makes you feel bad for doing it, like your having a day off, but I use it to get through my emails and reports, do the morning school run and have the joy of no public transport. These little things make a difference.
