Pros

WFH flexibility Some great people Summer Fridays

Cons

Working at Health Union over the years is like watching the horse in the Neverending Story slowly sink in the swamp of sadness. This is a company who is no longer what they used to be. And they have no idea who they are now. I have serious concerns about the longevity of this company. They are making some business decisions that just don't make any sense. There have been so many red flags. I wonder if more layoffs are coming down the road or if they are going to try to sell the company. The CEO runs the company based on emotion and ego. Its not uncommon for him to cry in company wide meetings.. That's not appropriate. Some in senior leadership can be tone deaf and, in many ways have lost their sense of direction. Health Union as a whole has lost its way and has strayed from its mission. They used to create communities based on patient needs. And that's still true to some extent. But they're reallly in deep with big pharma now and are creating communities that almost seem to serve as an extension of big pharma's sales department. The pay is low. (There are a lot of fake salaries reported on glassdoor for HU). You don't come to Health Union to make money.Sure, senior leadership will say that they pay market value blah, blah, blah. After all, they have the studies to prove it...lol. Typical corporate speak. The pay is low. I personally can count on 2 hands the number of people who left HU and made at least $30K+ more or even double their salary. HU often pays lip service to equality and equity, so I'll give them this: we're equally underpaid. . Gaslighting is a real art here. It's gotten to the point that I document things because I've gotten tired of hearing "We didn't say that" or "Taht never happened". Favoritism and nepotism run amock here as well. They love kool aid drinkers and cheerleader types. But disagree? no bueno. If you work here, you need to smile, nod your head, and make sure that you give the impresssion that everything is a-okay. One review on this page said HU is a young company and should be given some slack. No. HU has been around since 2010 – long enough to know better AND do better. HU blames recent restructuring on the economy. Does the economy play a part? Yes. But there have been many poor decisions over the years made by senior leadership. yet the higher ups will not acknowledge this and will not own they're part in creating this mess that is now Health Union. Its sad really. This was once a nice company with some really great people. Now it feels like its struggling just to make it.. I don’t have confidence that they’ll be able to turn things around. Health Union feels like a company that's flailing. Morale is low. There are a lot of people looking for new jobs. I don't believe the layoffs are over. It will be interesting to see if Health Union is even around in a couple of years.

Pros

I genuinely loved the work I was doing and the people on my team that I worked with on a day to day basis, the worker bees are generally good people who believed that we were there to serve our communities and patients who need them. The collaboration among those doing the real daily work for the communities was always great because we were all enthusiastic to do our best for the health leaders and those who needed the communities.

Cons

Health Union is toxic, classic “we are a family” red flag, and possibly a sinking ship. They act like they provide above and beyond for their people, but they offer bare minimum pay across the board, and nothing special when it comes to benefits, etc. while expecting you to praise them for it. The leadership of this company is full of leaders who will talk down to and belittle you, and there is very much a distinct flavor of fear in the company among those who are not in positions of influence because of this. You cannot speak up, contribute, or propose new ideas and solutions without being gaslit, labeled as a problem, and made to feel like everyone else thinks the company is perfect and it's just a “you” problem. I thought I was the only one feeling some of the ways I felt until I discovered many people felt the same but were too scared or tired to speak up. The nepotism is deep. They are fully aware the pay is low for everyone and attempted to justify low compensation equating to job stability, and then laid off a large chunk of the company after first mentally and emotionally torturing us with the announcement "layoffs are coming" followed by no significant updates until a month and a half later when they laid everyone off. I guess the update was "you have no job". Not sure there’s a “good” way to lay people off, but it absolutely could’ve been more tactful. Will be interested to see what happens to this company going forward. I sincerely hope the good people who remain can get out quickly as they deserve better. I learned many lessons here, unfortunately a lot of them being red flags to be aware of going forward. Health Union initially attracted me and many others in with their “company values”, “people first”, and ended up being an incredible disappointment.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. At Health Union, we strive to cultivate an environment where employees can collaborate, innovate, and deliver results in an inclusive, supportive environment. Employees share their perspectives through pulse surveys, listening sessions, have direct access to c-level executives regularly, and often contribute to the development of the company’s ways of working, company culture, and workplace policies. Ideas and suggestions that can reasonably enhance our workplace are strongly encouraged, though they do take time to assess, prioritize and implement. We are sorry to learn that your experience didn’t meet your expectations, and we recognize the challenges of our recent restructuring.

Pros

At first, the company sold me on putting patients first. But it soon became clear that that drive for this company was to make money, keep favorites happy, and hire and retain friends.

Cons

Once I left the company, many people Ra he’d out to me expressing similar concerns to me. Middle managers felt unsupported and in the dark about important leadership decisions. People managers were unfit and untrained to be managers, often micromanaging or choosing favorites while ignoring the rest. If you weren’t a people manager, you were not promoted. And often, you saw the same few people continuously get promoted while you just sat there wondering “why?”. The passive aggressive nature of the leadership team was astonishing. Many, including myself, did not feel safe going to HR with issues because those issues were not kept confidential. Or, even if they were, nothing changed. If you’re a favorite, you’re going to be just fine here. If you’re not, this environment is extremely toxic.

Thank you for sharing feedback about your experience working here. The growth and development of our team members is a key strategic priority for the company and we are disappointed to learn of your negative experience. As we grow as a company, we continue to actively seek input from team members so we can create an environment where everyone feels valued, regardless of their role and career path. The 6-part management development training program that all managers receive - and many requested - is just one example of this effort. The work we are doing to update our career framework to define and highlight both management and non-management career tracks is another. Thank you again for sharing and best of luck in your future endeavors.
