Pros

After nearly two years at Hypop, I am grateful for the position I held, the privilege I had supporting the business and for the position I hold now as a result of the training Hypop provided me. I can confidently report on Hypop’s excellent team culture and engaging team building events that helped bring employees in different areas of the business together. My time at Hypop, for the most part, was an enjoyable experience. With colourful characters, lots of learning opportunities and engaging tasks, there was never a dull moment in my team. You will feel supported and welcomed by your team from day one, encouraged to grow, take on unique challenges and call on your strengths to get tasks done. The direct managers at Hypop are wonderful and genuinely care about you. They also believe in the importance of upskilling and will encourage you to undertake courses to help you progress in your role. Team lunches are always appreciated and Kenji, the office dog, is very affectionate! Other perks include access to Hypop Studio for paid ‘Creative Days’, birthday leave and team specific events to celebrate milestones and busy sales periods.

Cons

Unfortunately, my experiences during the last couple of months of my employment was tarnished by upper management. The directors of Hypop do not effectively communicate well with all employees, favouring the managers over other employees of lower status. Performance requests for feedback from specific directors are denied or not followed through with, issues amongst team members are dealt with little regard for wellbeing and involve passive aggressive behaviour from directors, sloppy HR rules and contracts with limited access to HR support. Burn out is also common due to the amount of unmanageable work that is assigned to employees for such minimal pay. The directors refuse to listen to concerns and insist that the work can be managed without considering the individuals current workload, quality of work produced and work style. What was most distressing was my lack of empowerment during my time at Hypop. The directors were cold, unapproachable and failed to respect me both as an employee and as a person. Very little acknowledgement and praise was given when I went above my job role and assigned responsibilities. Opportunities placed upon me by the directors were suddenly stripped from me without reason and, if my work was not satisfactory in their eyes, they would never contact me directly to seek a resolution. The behaviour of Hypop’s directors became malicious when I announced my two week notice. I was immediately isolated and cut off from formal and informal support services, the directors acted as if I had already left and disrespected me on my final day despite my last attempts at leaving on a positive note.

Pros

The employees are what kept me coming to this job. The most genuine caring people you could hope to work with. Benefits included product discounts (up to 50% for some brands), “studio days” where you could use the studio for free and be paid your wage for the day, and a general chill atmosphere. You will have support when dealing with difficult customers.

Cons

Micro-management from the beginning, including “checklists” for every task imaginable, including general daily tasks you should do anyways, such as “check my email”. Pay discrepancies which when brought up, the messages were DELETED. Pay discrepancies included annual/sick leave not being paid correctly, and gaslighting to believe you were wrong. Communication issues from the directors regarding incredibly important details. In one instance, I broke a policy regarding sick leave and was made to sign the document making me aware of said policy AFTER. I could go on. Stay away from this company.
