Pros

Unlike most charities they have lots of money so no risk the funding will run out. There’s a new chief exec and a newish young leadership team. info and advice does great work. Innovation team trying to shake things up. Involvement team doing worthwhile work.

Cons

They fundamentally have no idea who they are or why they exist. There is no strategy and hasn’t been for several years and no sign of one. Few people seem proud of the work they do for old people. Measurement of impact is very poor. It’s very hierarchical and most new ideas or initiatives get killed because they might not be in line with strategy (when it arrives). There is endless consultation in strategy or innovation or continuous improvement but nothing changes. Confidence in the leadership is very low and morale at rock bottom. Heads of department have very little power. Staff get axed and leave with little communication as to why. Turmoil over the last few years has chewed up and spat out some great people.

Pros

Some good work has been done in the community, supporting older people. The Services Team really care for the people the charity supports.

Cons

Charity does not know what it is - is it an overstaffed advocacy group or a charity to support people at the point of service delivery. Far too much money is spent on campaigning and advocacy with nothing to show, despite the laughable 'I did this' achievement blogs that are written. Influencing and Policy is the noisiest team in terms of need for self promotion, they (Heads of) have forgotten that they are are not employed to push self-interest projects and raise their own profiles, the focus has to be on the people the charity says it supports. If donors and supporters knew how much money was wasted, they'd swiftly find another organisation to support. Most ex-staff will agree you are completely shunned when you decided it is time to leave, no farewell card, no call from your manager, nothing. A request for an exit interview was declined. Left the org as no development opportunities, or chance for promotion/progression. There is a culture of bullying that has not been properly addressed.

Pros

Colleagues were friendly and caring. Good charity mission.

Cons

Three restructures in two years. Breached personal data on more than one occasion. Like many charities, Independent Age made redundancies during the pandemic. This was attributed to staff comments that the management structure should be streamlined. Roles were scrapped at a particular level, and their holders offered the chance to apply for a post with a lesser title. The previous time the management structure was 'streamlined' (late 2019) assistant directors' titles were upgraded to 'director'. This was a bitter pill to swallow.
