Not the Urban Ag Job for You

Pros

Great Coworkers. Worked with some of the greatest humans here, with big hearts and exceptional knowledge and skills.

Cons

Don't work here. Everyone comes in thinking that they're working for a sustainable urban ag company that is "changing the world" but are quickly disillusioned by the workplace environment and priorities of the company. Plus, it becomes very obvious the whole business model is definitely not "eco-centric" like it claims and produces a lot of unnecessary waste while ignoring the fact that the lettuce people are growing isn't really all that local if it was shipped across the country to your doorstep. The CEO knows nothing about agriculture, yet consistently makes decisions about it without consulting those who do know. As a horticulturist, along with other team members I was almost never consulted on important decisions regarding plant health, hydroponic system functions, and plant types despite having many years of experience. Pretty much across the board employees are under-compensated and undervalued - given too many added responsibilities/promotions without being compensated appropriately. The company cut corners to pay their workers less wherever possible, even after this was brought to their attention. Employees consistently get yelled at for asinine reasons, everyone is expected to fall in line, and opinions and voices are rarely listened to. While I was there I saw over half the staff turn over due to people leaving. Whoever is reading this, you deserve to be treated well. Find a job that values its employees and listens to them. This ain't it.

Stay Away... Unless they replace the founders

Pros

Really cool product and a mission you feel good about. It's cool to work for a brand that so many high-profile influencers and celebrities love (another nod to the really awesome product they make).

Cons

The "celebrity" founder is not involved at all. Never came into the office once. Never was in a meeting. Never sent an email. Nothing. Never met her. One or two people in the company could figure out a way to get her to pose for some pictures at home to use on the site, but that's all. The other two founders are at least always there, but they are equally as troublesome. One is a complete jerk to your face almost daily, the other is generally nice but a complete jerk behind your back if he ever disagrees with you. Meetings devolve into awkward shouting sessions where the CEO/founder would be yelling and talking down to this one tech/ops guy for like half the meeting. They really don't know what they're doing, but have lucked out to have such a nice product. The technology they built to manage the business is really a mess too.

Unsupportive, unsustainable, and toxic work culture

Pros

I joined Lettuce Grow for the potential positive impact that the product could have on revolutionizing local food systems. Unfortunately, due to the horrible work culture, I don't see Lettuce Grow being successful in that mission.

Cons

Unsupportive Oftentimes roles at Lettuce Grow are not structured for success. Roles are not clearly defined, not given the authority they need to be effective, and are not respected the way they should be. I noticed women and employees with agricultural/horticultural backgrounds especially had to deal with this the most. Numerous "legacy" employees and team structures that existed from the company's inception as well as new "tech bro" hires aided in this unsupportive environment that made it nearly impossible to grow and succeed there. Unsustainable The company has a great product that can aid customers in living more sustainably, however, corporate sustainability and environmental justice was never talked about. There were no ESG or CSR programs and when it came to new ideas to improve the sustainability of company operations, they were not heard. In this way, LG is just another "sustainability tech" company that stops with a sustainable product and doesn't take responsibility for other inefficient operations and business environmental impacts. Toxic work culture I experienced incredibly unprofessional behavior like finger pointing, calling people out in meetings, and non-transparent decision making. Hiring decisions were made without consulting individual teams, changes to processes and operations happened at whim with little explanation, and there was little to no collaboration across teams. They offer unlimited PTO but vacations are not respected. COVID protocols in the office were not followed or enforced by leadership making time in the office and team get-togethers stressful and unsafe.
