Mismanaged Company, Underpaid and Overworked Employees

Pros

Megalomedia offers relatively steady work for freelancers and contract employees by Austin, TX standards and for full time employees they offer benefits as well.

Cons

The heads of the company have never worked in production outside of their own shows and do not run this like a working production company. They have minimal knowledge of equipment or production guidelines. The company is terribly mismanaged, constantly over budget, late on deadlines for shows and has a terrible reputation with the networks that work with them. They underpay all of their employees because they feel they can get away with it, being one of the bigger production companies in Austin. Certain positions, such as an Associate Producer/Coordinator are paid less than 1000/week because the head of the company googled what "Office Associates" make, even though that's not even the same job. AP/Coordinators are also on call 24/7 and juggle what would be 5 different jobs at any real production company for that abysmal rate. They show a constant disrespect for their employees time and do not appreciate the absurdly long hours people work for them. They always feel threatened by employees who have legitimate production experience and try to suggest changes for the better, so they fire them or push them out. Their goal is to pay people as little as possible so they can get away with constantly going over budget and walking away with their own personal chunks of cash. The President feels the need to micromanage every single aspect of the post production process after not paying attention to it or watching cuts for the entire time it is shooting. He will constantly come in with ultimatums on issues that he caused by not paying attention when asked to earlier. I was put in many situations that were morally wrong regarding cast members, their health and their insurance.

Inexperienced management undervalues workforce

Pros

At any given time, this company employs many people from the Austin-based film industry, whether part time or full time. So there's at least some opportunity to network and if this is your first job in film, the bar for entry is very low.

Cons

Everyone is unhappy. All roles are paid less than industry standard, and although one or two departments enjoy less hectic hours than industry norms, most have their schedules abused to the point of an extremely unfulfilling work/life balance. The company is run by one wealthy CEO and two sisters whose authority has been rapidly increased over a short amount of years to vice-president status, for routinely validating nonsensical management practices without raising any question to those decisions sabotaging the long-term health of the company. An example would be funneling practically all decisions through top management, which results in high numbers of editors and production members regularly sitting idle for full 14-hour weekend work days while management sorts out "creative" decisions. The work itself is objectively not hard, but this sort of devaluing employees' capabilities to self-manage seems to eat away at their spirits within just a few months. Most positions are contract based and every year, those employees vow to never come back after their current contract expires, although many do because the Austin film market is historically unstable, and Megalomedia takes full advantage of this lack of demand.

Pros

They make some interesting content about a wide variety of subjects, and I met lots of interesting people including subjects and crew members but...

Cons

But too many 20 plus hour days for no good reason. Less than 10 hour turn arounds. Unsafe levels of exhaustion and stress.
