Current Employee - Guest Specialist in New York, NY

I have been working at Moma full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great salary and benefits as this is a union position Consistent work schedule Great if you're looking for longterm, stable work More respect and agency than many other customer-facing roles (but that bar is quite low) Very easy work

    Cons

Little to no opportunities for career advancement. If you're looking to move into a real art-related role in the institution from this position, it's simply never going to happen. You might be able to move into management or reception. All of the typical pitfalls of face-to-face customer service - disrespect from visitors and higher ups alike, generally unpleasant and not engaging work Lots of conflict amongst team members and disrespect from higher ups. It's not friendly and there is no illusion of unity

I worked at Moma full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great benefits package and insurance. It's also great to meet and help people from all over the world.

    Cons

The management is very immature in handling their staff. When promoting from within there are some managers that have remained friends with people they are now tasked to manage and let that clique attitude overtly bleed into the everyday work, clearly picking favorites from their friend groups. Turning a blind eye to conversations and time on their phones that takes time away from the guests. But if you are not part of their clique nothing you do will be satisfactory. They don't speak to their staff directly and keep a "laundry list" style of things they disapprove of and wait weeks before they address it, which by that time they have already decided their displeasure in your work. When you ask for feedback on your work they beat around the bush in the moment and do not speak to you directly.

I worked at Moma full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Everything is at your finger tips: the library, the galleries, the collection database, lectures, movies, public programs, staff caf, an employee discount at the MoMA store! A great place for curious minds. Worked with a brilliant curator who let me work full time even though the internship was initially offered for 2 days/week.

    Cons

Interviewed for a few full time positions after my internship ended that I did not get.
