Pros

Cool little place to work, very fun vibe and great employees. Management does a good job at what they do, and everyone looks out for each other. Good team-building activities and events.

Cons

More emphasis on elite members and providing traditional service rather than providing the moxy brand service. Higher ups create a lot of stress for on-floor management around important events and VIP visits, without much regard for ops team.

Pros

-Guaranteed Hours -Rate of pay -Trauma bonds You’ll make allies within the Crew Members as you each individually get treated like dirt by guests, Senior Management and a specific Crew Leader. Heed this warning - the hourly rate is not worth trading your mental wellbeing and self respect.

Cons

-Terrible management -Awful workplace culture -Lack of humanity There is zero professionalism from Senior Management - easy to work out who is part of an unspoken clique, doing whatever in their power to make you feel as small as possible if they decide they don’t like you. I’ve seen multiple staff walk away due to the actions of a certain Crew Leader (you’ll figure it out pretty quickly if you have the misfortune of accepting a job role). I was offered the job in the midst of a slapdash interview (HUGE red flag) as they appeared to be desperate for staff - probably because the previous team walked out after said Leader was awarded the position. If you expect efficient training, don’t! If you expect poor training, don’t! If you expect any training at all, don’t! You will be flung straight into the deep end and expected to operate an outdated Hotel system without any support - and they will not be happy when you don’t know what you’re doing. Pray you’re not on shift when the fire alarm goes off - we also didn’t get training in that regard either. Doesn’t appear to be any understanding across the whole team as to what to do in the midst of an emergency situation - just a lot of flapping, panicking and confusion. As you can imagine, guests do NOT respond well to staff guessing what to do in this situation. You’re expected to jump between multiple job roles, completely taking advantage of their staff and disguising it as ‘multitasking.’ On gig nights the bar will be rammed with people, with 3 unprepared Crew Members fighting to check people into rooms, serve at the bar, prepare and make pizzas, clear tables in the foyer along with taking verbal abuse from guests who had to wait 20 minutes just to get a key to a room they’ve paid £200 for. Completely justified on their behalf and completely draining on our behalf. Never in my years of working hospitality have I met Senior Management that don’t work evenings or weekends. Seems to be they’re under the impression it’s a 9-5 desk job. There’s no passion, no support and absolutely no leadership.

Pros

Interview is based on attitude, not past experience. Management are friendly and approachable, Crew leaders are the same but as the Nightshift team tends to be much smaller, you get to know the team and Crew leader more than senior management. Pay is good and from my experience is better than rival companies, higher than other Marriott chains. The whole ethos of Moxy is laid back is not the same as lazy. They want you to be friendly and relaxed with guests, not standing to attention and fawning over guests. If you are willing to get stuck into the work then you’ll do grand. Busy nights can be very busy but at my branch there is a good team spirit. Quiet nights are great, get your work done then you’re welcome to use the free pool table with colleagues etc. If you want a career in hospitality then they are excellent. As I said, the pay is very fair and because your role has such a broad scope you will learn a lot quickly and build experience in bar work, reception/checking in guests, running the night audit, food safety and cooking. A job at Moxy could easily lead to a Supervisory role elsewhere or within the group because of your knowledge and experience. My rota is done several weeks in advance so I can plan around it. They offer a pay rise of 2.5% following completion of the 3 month probationary period, optional pay rises in January on top of the standard April rise. I leave every shift on time, when it’s a busy night the time just flies past. After many disappointments - interviews that seemed to go great then never hearing back, not even rejections, Moxy snapped me up and gave me a chance. For that I am genuinely grateful and I would highly recommend them as an employer to anyone looking to work in hospitality. The managers stay out of the way but are still available and happy to help if you need it. My crew leader has a ton of experience and has been happy to answer any questions and show me how things are done.

Cons

There doesn’t seem to be a formal plan or outline for training staff, it’s very much on you to tell someone if you’re struggling and need shown the ropes. That said, when you do speak up they help immediately. They understand that it makes their job easier if you know what you’re meant to be doing. They offer a number of cocktails, if you don’t know how to make them there are cheat sheets stuck to the bar but that doesn’t help if you don’t know what equipment to use or glasses to serve in. That can be an issue when the bar is very busy - just keep calm and explain you’re still in training and a colleague will help you though. These are really pretty minor “cons” to be fair.
